Cahari Creation Lore

The Creation of Life

by Toradh
From nothing, the cosmos brought creation into existence by means of a melody played from its breath. With this song the earth, sea, sky, Sun, moons and stars, wind, fire and all the forces of nature were formed. Along with the forces the song also created the fates to nurture the world.
— Traditional Cahar song of creation
When the foam of the sea met land, a tree was created - the Mother Tree. And as the seeds from it fell to the ground, so life was born in the shape of all the animals and plants. The three Fates looked on in wonderment at life and at last found their purpose, and they set out to make life that they could control. They stripped bark from the trunk of the tree and spun it into a thread, which they then wove into forms and so created the first beings with knowledge - The Firlagh

The Firlagh

As the Fates were unused to weaving with the rough threads from the bark, the Firlagh were created in a wide variety of powers and sizes - from giants to imps, and Kraken to changelings. Many had deformities and abnormalities. They saw that they were the Lords of all the lands and beasts, and set out their dominion over everything.
When the Fates tried to control them, the Firlagh grew resentful and angrily cut the threads of fate which held sway over them.
Enraged at the rebellion of their first creation, the Fates set out to create another race, one that they could always control and that would destroy the Firlagh. From the leaves of the Mother Tree, the Fates spun a thread so fine that it was invisible to all but them. From this, they wove the Adanu.

The Adanu

Like the thread that spun them, the Adanu were mostly fine and beautiful to look upon. They loved all things good and light in the world, and viewed the Furlagh with resentment and hatred. The Adanu fought the Firlagh many times but never managed to defeat them.
In one battle, one Firlagh (Crom Cruach) lost his eyes. With his blindness he was able to discern the threads that wove the fate of the Adanu and he cut them with his spear. The Adanu continued to struggle against the Firlagh, although now they were in control of their own fate.

Mortal Men

Frustrated, the Fates went back to the tree and made threads from the branches. These threads were not as fine as the Adana's nor as coarse as the Firlagh's. This time however, the Fates cut the threads into short strands. and from these they created mankind. They were the mortal men, who having been formed with only short threads of fate, were doomed to die and depart the world.
Although mortal man did not have the individual power of the Firlagh or Adanu, the fast-breeding humans had power in numbers. Both the Firlagh and the Adanu vied for the support of the Cahar in their wars against each other. In general, humanity sided with the light and good powers of the Adanu, but there were always humans motivated by greed and other baser instincts that would aid the Firlagh. and then there were the Fates who would always weave their webs to make life difficult for both immortal races.

The Final Battle

After many long years of struggles, the animosity between the Adanu and the Firlagh came down to one last battle. The Cahar sided with the Adanu, but only on condition that the Cahar could have first choice in the share of the land. In the tumultuous last battle, the Adanu eventually triumphed over the Firlagh who were banished to the underworld, the deep ocean and the world's other darkest places. Devasted art their own losses and the destruction caused in the world, the Adanu retreated to the otherworld where they could live in peace and create a home for the deserving of the Cahar.

Author's Notes

Hi everybody. I'd really appreciate some feedback...
As you may or may not have noticed, this tale / creation myth / pantheon is an adaption of the Irish myths with some major changes. I don't know whether I should:

  1. Make it more original by changing it even further away from Irish mythology.
  2. Leave it as is with its obvious Irish influences as a kind of homage to Irish mythology.
  3. or
  4. Just change to exactly the same as Irish mythology, and stop pretending its original!!!
Please give me your thoughts!   For those unfamiliar with the 'Real World' mythology
Parts that are the same as Irish mythology:
  1. The 3 races (Irish = the magical Formoians & Tuatha De Danaan, and the Milesians), but not how or why they were created.
  2. The Finale - (Irish = Formorians banished to dark places and deep sea, the Tuatha de Danaan tricked into taking the land under the surface)
  3. All Gods will bear a resemblance to Irish Mythological characters (Balor, Morrigan, Lugh, Epona, etc)
  Standard pan Indo-European mytholgies
  1. Land creation from sea foam.
  2. World tree.
  3. Fates weaving webs
