Pike
The fiercest of the river fish.
Introduction
Known for their strength and valor, as well as their ability to survive harsh winters, the pike (Hinkan) exists throughout most of the Sain'inr region.
Habitats
Orhin
Pike thrive in the Yilainr River, where they are caught by Orhinr fishermen and prepared in a variety of dishes. The fish itself is respected for its fierce strikes and some fishers may even cut it free out of respect when caught, heedless of the damage to lines and nets.
Culinary Uses
The flesh of a pike is used as a bland base for complex sauces and spices. Typically, the complimenting dish will be sour, although salty variations are occasionally used.
Medicinal Uses
Although only a supplement to the actual medicine, herbs wrapped in pike skin may be given to those weakened by illness. The fish itself is good for rebuilding strength.
Other Uses
Pike fish leather is occasionally used to make gloves or to fasten weapons to a belt.
Symbolism
Pike are the symbol of warriors and feature prominently in embroidery. A sword or knife made of particularly strong metal might have a pike's fin or jaw carved into it's handle. Those who survive disasters are represented as pikes in stories and poetry.
Gahus
Pike live in the shallow, cool parts of the marsh nearest the mountains, around Ajijia-Civa and the streams feeding into the wetland.
Culinary Uses
Similar to Orhinr usage. The pike is marinated in spices and lathered in strong-tasting sauces.
