Early life & Upbringing
Sereyllel En'Aluin had a difficult start to her life. She never got to know her mother, and her father abandoned her and her sister when she was only ten. Her memories of her mother are mostly non-existent, but she swears she can still recall the scent of jadelily on her mother's robes as a baby. Her father was not around often growing up, leaving Sera to raise Elleberith almost entirely on her own. She remembers her father "always being angry and confused", and stinking of wine. Sera quickly learned how to cook and clean, start a fire, launder clothes and bandage a wound. She grew very close to her little sister, and they would develop a special bond that few siblings had.
The winter of the year 2123 was an exceptionally bitter one. Snow storms and brutally cold temperatures blasted the north of Hasdall, turning the land in to a frozen tundra. A month in to the winter season, Elleberith became sick and developed severe pneumonia. Despite Sera's frantic efforts to help her sister get better, to ease her discomfort, Elleberith would succumb to the sickness, dying at the age of six. Her father didn't discover the news of Elleberith's death until three days later, as he was becoming increasingly absent from home. Sera was understandably devastated, and recalls being angry with her father for not being around more. Her most vivid memory of her father would occur two days later, when he woke Sera up in the middle of the night. His weathered cheeks were stained with tears, and the overwhelming aroma of wine and pipe smoke surrounded him. He leaned down alongside Sera's bed, and ran a single hand through her hair. He sniffled heavily and whispered in her ear, "goodbye, little Sera", and stumbled towards the door and left. That was the last time Sereyllel En'Aluin would see her father.
Heartbroken, lost, and alone, Sera turned to the church for refuge. She found an unimaginable sense of peace and belonging here, and it would become her new home for several years. Sera wanted desperately to learn how to become a better caretaker, how to become a healer. She didn't want anyone to ever have to feel the pain and helplessness she felt watching her sister die. She spent many of her days praying to the gods and studying scriptures, seeking enlightenment and spiritual growth. The priests at the church sensed a genuine aura of goodness within Sera, and began teaching her the wonders of healing and restoration. Over time, she became so steadfast in her faith that she vowed to devote her life to the service of the gods. She found particular strength in the teachings of Azrael, and henceforth devoted her life to becoming a cleric of her divine will.
When Sera was 15, a man came and visited her parish. He bore a striking resemblance to her father, but thankfully, lacked his most memorable qualities. Itham Drennis, Sera's uncle, had finished his last tour with the Royal Navy, and traveled to Riverfall seeking out his niece. He explained to her that her father had sought him out several years prior, pleading with him to abandon the Navy and come look after Sera. But he explained that he could not break his oath and become a deserter. Instead, he sent word to the church in Riverfall to look after Sera until he was relinquished of his contracted tour of duty. Sera and Ithram quickly became close, and she came to learn a great deal from her uncle about his time in the Navy and his love of sailing. He even recounted a few fond memories he shared of growing up alongside his brother. He was many things that Sera's father was not, and she cherished having a parental figure in her life for the first time.
Over the coming years, Ithram would reside in Riverfall and look after Sera, their relationship growing ever stronger. When she was 18, her uncle informed her that he was going to get in to the trade business. He had a nice cargo ship that he afforded from the military stipends he received, and he could no longer ignore his love of sailing the open seas. Sera conferred with the priests at her church, telling them she wanted to go with her uncle. She wanted to spread the word of Azrael across the world, and become a beacon of her will. They agreed, and blessed Sera, wishing her well in her travels. She shared an emotional goodbye with the elders and those that had looked after her for so many years, and after 18 years in Riverfall, Sereyllel En'Aluin was about to see the world.
