The Grand Synedrion

The Grand Synedrion are a grim collection of powerful undead who gather in the Hall of Hewn Stone in Fortress Pax where they debate the nature of existence, sometimes forming lesser synedra for complicated matters requiring their own quorum. The first such synedra was the Synedrion Lament, which controls the armies of Golgotha. The basileus used the invading armies as a blood offering which bound Abaddon within the perfect geometries of the Psychomanteum Siamun, including His Own, which became the Magistrate of Peace. The Synedrion Lament discusses the nature of the basileus's weaving and it's purpose, incidentally analysing and maintaining the effect, reinforcing it on the foreign dead. They keep ghoul armies raging the wastes at the borders, feeding on those they catch and inducting the strongest. The armies of Golgotha are commanded by the Synedrion Lament but also kept within the borders of Golgotha by them, according to parameters set by the Grand Synedrion. Golgotha officers are stationed as the Synedrion Lament orders. The Golgotha military is subject to the Magistrate of Peace but otherwise serves the Synedrion Lament, despite these two agencies being independent of each other and unconnected. Other synedra exist as the Grand Synedrion requires, but some form spontaneously in regions with many undead or substantive haunts of dark powers. All are subordinate to the Grand Synedrion.

Structure

The synedra are coalitions of undead of 23-71 members, always an odd number, who gather to address concerns. The Grand Synedrion is a permanent ongoing debate, but others form as needed and are as readily disbanded as these concerns are resolved.

Public Agenda

The synedra are informal debating societies that address the needs and concerns of an undead society as well as the perverse nature of undead existence. They probe and plumb the depths of experience, assess, and judge. Their authority and power are entirely dependent on the actions and abilities of their members.

Assets

The dead of Golgotha obey the synedra and all synedra obey the Grand Synedrion. They have access to every afterlife connected to Terra Antiqua and are not beyond jockeying undead labor through these channels. They regulate heavily the interactions with the living and the many afterlives.

History

When the basileus completed the Prisoning of Abaddon and tainted the very land, He disappeared from Golgotha entirely and surfaced in Byzantium, where He arranged the finance of an expedition to survey the Cataclysm at Golgotha. His Expedition formed the Magistrate of Peace, creating His Guard-Captain as Grand Master of Fortress Pax and found the Grand Synedrion in the Hall of Hewn Stone. They came to an accord when the second Grand Synedrion accepted submission and formed the Synedrion Lament.

Demography and Population

Any undead may address any synedra, but only those of adequate power may join their debates. The concerns of more powerful undead outweigh those of lesser, and some synedra are little more than tools of the greater haunts.
