Thellgrass

Thellgrass is a highly flammable, highly invasive species used in the agricultural cycle in . It grows to about waist height and varies in color from bright gold (new sprouts) to deep brown (end of life cycle). It is an annual plant with shallow root systems, but spreads very quickly. Thellgrass likes full sunlight, but grows sparsely enough to allow other tenacious species such as chokevine to take root.
In XX, thellgrass is intentionally seeded in planting fields to control chokevine growth. Thellgrass is seeded in mid spring in areas where chokevine has grown, and by early summer has reached a mature, medium brown color. The grass is then burned, killing both the thellgrass and underlying chokevine and allowing the local crops, predominantly chasha root , to sprout leaves. It is very important to make sure all of the thellgrass is burned so it does not spread beyond the intentionally seeded areas. During the growth phase, farmers will burn strips of land at the borders of the fields to stem its spread. If a field is ignited before the thellgrass has reached its mature height, the heat of the fire may not be enough to kill the chokevine , effectively rendering that plot useless for a season.

Thellgrass does not have a known origin, and is not found naturally in regions outside of XX. It is theorized that the species was either cultivated or magically grown in XX, as it has been used by farmers for hundreds of years. Small pots of thellgrass are cultivated in carefully isolated pots between growing seasons to propagate it. Occurrences of thellgrass outside of XX are swiftly burned to prevent its spread, as it can easily displace other crops.
