Tempus

Summary

The world of Tempus was a world very similar to earth. There were some monsters roaming but they weren’t too dangerous and they were being hunted for sport. All of this changed however when one day a terrible event happened that changed the world forever. It was a normal midsummer night until suddenly the moon turned blood red, and all the stars seemed to disappear from the sky. That night all the planes of existence merged together in some way. These changes brought apocalyptic destruction and changed the landscape immensely. Portals to the plane of water started spewing forth massive amounts of water, raising the water level of the oceans of the world so high they all became one. The fire and earth plane summoned never ending storms of dust and ash and changed the geography and temperature drastically. The plane of air started opening rifts in ever changing locations, changing the weather from calm and sunny to deadly storms in seconds. Every different plane brought its own type of chaos to the world. Out of these rifts to other planes came creatures never seen before in this world. The already existing monsters also grew more dangerous. The imbalance between the planes seemed to make the monsters increasingly restless and agitated, and some of them even seemed to have been mutated somehow. Many cities sank into the sea, were overrun by monsters or destroyed by storms, and countless people lost their homes and lives. This was 36 years ago. After all this time the world has mostly recovered and adapted to the new landscape they are forced to live in. Since the water level rose immensely, most of the world now consists of islands, so the people turned their attention to naval transportation, making ships the most commonly used mode of transport available. The landscape wasn’t the only thing that was experiencing changes. Since the water rose most of the underdark was flooded and forced the creatures living down there to the surface. Over the years peace has been established between the surface dwellers and the ones from below. However, while there is peace, that doesn’t mean there is acceptance. The people themselves also started to experience changes. Slowly people started appearing who were somehow infused with powers of other planes, from people with a skin hard as rock to things that can only be explained as psionic abilities. Humans and monsters also weren’t the only sentient creatures around anymore. Fey, demons, celestials, elementals and mutated monstrosities were becoming more and more common. There were also the creatures people stared referring to as astral pirates, a race who sometimes came through a rift to raid the surrounding areas with their flying metal ships and strange weapons. In the chaos while civilization was being re-established, an age of piracy was slowly dawning. To battle this a group of hardy seafarers banded together to form a make shift navy to govern the sea. This group rapidly started gaining members and authority, eventually growing out into the one and only authority on the sea. To this day no-one has discovered what caused the disaster to happen. Most druids and other magic users are doing all they can to dampen the effects of the rifts or close them entirely and return the world to normal.
