Syn Alrinheim
Syn Alrinheim
At the time of her final apprenticeship with Master Lilov, Syn Alrinheim was a little known naval navigator and charter-woman along the coasts of Eirianca. Although she had only a few voyages under her belt, and all under the supervision of Lilov, she showed unquenchable thirst for knowledge of the seas and its mysteries. Her primary fascination was with the center of the Wisted Sea.
The Wisted Sea separates the small peninsula country of Eirianca and the northeastern country Monsiria. Little is known about this mysterious body of water that long ago thrust the bridge of land that connected the two cities deep beneath the waves. Though a relatively short distance between the two, there has not been a ship in generations that has traveled a direct path from Eirianca's capital city Minhelune on the west coast to Monsiria's capital Thelia on its eastern coast. The safest routes, despite taking much more time, were to head south along either coastline until crossing over the Sehren Sea, or traversing northwards into the Draugust Sea only to backtrack southwards along the opposite coast until hitting either capital.
This avoidance of the center of the Wisted Sea is has long been considered the only option, lest a captain and crew wish to disappear indefinitely amongst it's currents, woven into an expansive nautical web of trapped souls. The Wisted Sea was said to be crawling with spirits and supernatural creatures that entangled any who made the mistake of sailing too close.
Syn was enraptured with the idea of these haunted waters, and was even more so enthralled with making that direct route between Minhelune and Thelia a reality, knowing that connecting the two capitals would allow them to establish better trade and communication between the two countries.
Resourceful and determined, Syn slowly developed relations with a plethora of magic users - wizards, druids, clerics, and even a few warlocks - while still under her apprenticeship, many of whom were students themselves. Appealing to their curiosity, their ambition and often their hubris, she used them to aid her in her research of the Wisted Sea.
When her apprenticeship ended, she and her gathering of magic users took small scouting voyages into the sea, gathering new information on the spirits scattered throughout. She charted every change in current, recorded depths, and even created relief maps of the sea floor. Most importantly, she discovered that these spirits did not move - they each were anchored to specific spots, and she made detailed notes and marked the locations of every single one she came across.
It took many near-death experiences, but about 5 years after her apprenticeship ended, Syn Alrinheim published the first map with a direct route from Minhelune to Thelia. Although many ships take the longer routes, ships with necessary goods and trades are able to more efficiently make the trip between the two capitals, improving trade and relations between the two countries.
Currently, Syn is working with city officials and other navigators to create a series of light emitting buoys, through either magical or mundane means, in order to light the direct routes, increasing the safety of the ships sailing them. However, more research must be done on the spirits that reside there, as well as the effect the lights may have on them. Though the routes have been established, little is still known about these spirits, and why they are bound there, and few are willing to risk a closer look.
