Wake Stones

Three days. Three days since I've last slept, and I don't feel tired at all. For three days straight, me and a dozen other workers are stuck building another noble's manor on the countryside, and we're not getting any pay until its done. I've already lost count of how many wake stones I've gone through since I started. I'm writing this as the overseers switch off and take breaks. I'm thankful my ma taught me how to write before she was taken away for her debts, as it's the only thing keeping me sane right now. I'd heard the others talk about a new faction coming up around here, people that free slaves and other people like me. Here's to hoping they find us soon. Well, if they actually exist, that is.

Wakefulness is the widely used name for the effect of wake stones, a somewhat widely used drug around Teldir. Wake stones are fashioned from small rocks, usually . They are injected with special magic for alertness and a prestidigitation spell for flavoring. The magic is preserved so that the spells do not take effect until placed in one's mouth.

Properties

Wake stones is a somewhat simple stimulant, warding away exhaustion and fatigue while the stone is held in the mouth. The duration and strength of the wakefulness depends on the stone used. Some stones have been able to provide other benefits, such as minor healing or restoring of spells. Using more than one wake stone at a time could be very dangerous, as they seem to cause the heart to simply stop if too many are used in tandem. Using them in succession has proved to be less dangerous, although the more one uses at a time, the larger the energy crash, although it is not fatal.

Usage in Society

The effects of wakefulness are very sought after among laborers, and often they are exploited by overseers and foremen of laborers to have them work longer. This sometimes allows workers to go for days on end without rest or sleep of any kind. The usage of wake stones can lead to addiction, which is somewhat common among small folk.
