The Hidden History

Lost Histories given to the online party by George
Towards the end of the lost histories, a Great Modron march happened. This march was unlike others. The modron came and took their census like normal. Many modron were slaughtered, as normal, many individuals lost their lives, as normal. Where it differed, is after the Modron left, they returned in a highly focused assault on the prime material. They had learned of the Ritual.
The Ritual, which was in its infancy, was intended to bring back the species lost during the lost histories, essentially reversing or altering the history of the prime material. The modron being creatures of law, order saw this as a massive upset to the natural laws & order of the universe. As such they threw their massively depleted armies at the prime material in the hopes of stamping out every individual involved in the ritual, and the only way to be sure was to exterminate any sort of magical inclination mortals had.
Thus the great modron march became the great modron invasion. This war lasted a decade. The war ended as the last bastion of magical power was about to fall. The small research facility of Inkton in the High Moor. It was here that the final stages of the ritual were taking place.
In the final hours, the desperate mages altered the Ritual. The amended ritual would hopefully bring back most of the lost species, erase all beings memory of any part of the ritual that they knew of, trick the modron that they were successful in their campaign, that their "law and order" had been done.
Unfortunately the alterations did not have the intended effects. The modron did not leave, but knowledge of the ritual faded into a dull memory that it had happened, and knowledge of the Modron invasion was erased. The modron finished their invasion, slaying all those, now dazed, confused and defenseless in Inkton.

The Clairvoyant was established in 4452, by Carlos in the hopes that resource scarcity could be eliminated. What is not known by the general populace is that Carlos discovered an unusual vein of rubies deep underground, below that of the underdark itself. This unusual vein of rubies, dubbed "mind crystals" housed the magical power of many a failed lich. These "mind crystals" revealed to Carlos the history that was lost 600 odd years ago.

Carlos worked the remainder of his days to prevent such a thing happening again, and ultimately failed. The leadership of the Clairvoyant undertook his task. Eventually the small tradesman guild T Street Tinkering had made a name for itself, and the Clairvoyant decided to bring them in on their task hoping that the mechanics and tinkers would have a higher affinity with the modron than they did. Their gamble paid off in spades. Within 80 years T Street Tinkering evolved into the Engine and moved its HQ to Mechanius, where we find ourselves now. One of the main conditions was that while the Engine exists to keep law and order on the prime material, no modron march would happen on the prime material.
