In every world that harbors intelligent life, there are people who disappear without a trace. Many of these people are run aways. Many others vanish as a result of kidnappings, murders, or even slave trade. There are others still who fall into otherworldly vortices which deposit them elsewhere. 
It is unknown when these vortices became connected to Tarana, but it seems that it's a one way trip to, and not from. As a result there are people from Toril, Eberron, Oerth, Amonkhet, Ravnica, Theros, and more. If you look hard and long enough, you can literally find people in all walks of life.
