Losing the Maze Engine - S02E29 Report

General Summary

Alan begins working with the machine, attempting to use the machine to bend reality in hopes of separating himself from his master - perhaps even removing his master from existence.
The engine makes a loud whining noise and Mr. Garrick notices that his backpack has become lighter - the demon bottle, the lich book, and the demon hide have vanished. As the Party checks, all evil magical items have vanished.
Convinced the machine will bend to his will, Alan continues to move levers and flip switches. Suddenly multicolored arcs of light play across the surface of the engine and Alan is polymorphed into a giant goat.
Intrigued by the magic and wanting to return Alan to his original form, Gunther jumps onto the machine, but slips, beginning to slide down its side towards the lava. Joseph rushes over able to lean over the edge and nudge Gunther so that he can grab onto something stopping his slide.
The machine emits a flash of golden light and all magical items and artifacts vanish with a popping noise.
Enraged, Richter jumps onto the machine hoping to bring Dawnbringer back. Others then jump on, wanting their items back. With the weight, the machine shifts ad begins to slide.
The engine emits a flash of green light and a small leather sleeve, buttoned shut, appears between Richter and Gunther - Gunther quickly grabs it.
As the machine continues to shift and begins to slide down the cliff, Richter toss the goat from the machine and he, along with almost everyone else jumps to safety.
Mr. Garrick, desperate to get his items back continues to work on the machine until it lands in the lava. He then grabs Gunther and dimension doors to safety.
Gunther begins to cry.
Alan, engulfed in sadness walks to the edge of the cliff and stairs into the lava.
Bug, fearing Baphomet's arrival grabs Samantha and begins walking toward Blingdenstone.
Joseph, thinking about the magic items, suggests that Mr. Garrick contact Dawnbringer. Through messages to her and the modron they determine that the items are safe, but are in Mechanus.
With that issue being to resolve, Joseph turns to Alan. Richter is currently attempting to cheer him up, but is being rejected at every point.
Garrick, Darry, Richter and Gunther head to the Gallery of Angels for to long rest in a safe area. While there, Darry and Gunther plane shift to retrieve the items.
During their time in Mechanus, Darry asks Gunther about the party:

Gunther: His master found him on the street, then got the party together and they've been together ever since.
Darry: But I thought this was about demons.
Gunther: We are, we just get side tracked.
Darry: Are you always like this?
Gunther: Yes, we help each other get what we want. What do you want?
Darry: Stop the demons from invading the Material plane and to not die.
Gunther: Ah, that is a secondary goal.

Darry & Gunther return with the items. Richter sees the black stone as Gunther attempts to hand it back to Mr. Garrick. A small squabble ensues while Garrick tries to distance himself from the stone.
Unable to return it to his master, Gunther keeps the stone.
Back in the cavern where the Maze Engine was and following a long rest, Joseph approaches Alan but initially gets no response. After a long conversation, Joseph manages to talk him into leaving.
Meanwhile, Gunther takes those in the Gallery back to Araj using Windwalk.
Once in Araj, Gunther asks Mr. Garrick about the pouch. Garrick looking it over is almost 100% certain it is a Deck of Many Things and delightedly hands it back to Gunther. Immediately Gunther draws a card.
As the card vanishes, Darry grabs the pack saying that they should not play with it like its a toy. Gunther struggles to get the deck back, climbing up and down Darry.
With it back in his possession, Gunther draws another card. As it vanishes, an Avatar of Death appears and says that it has come for him.
Richter quickly attacks it, and another appears claiming that it has come for Richter. As the battle continues, each of the 4 make a hit on an Avatar and each time, a new one appears claiming that it has come for them. In time, the avatars are defeated.
Gunther looks down and pathetically hands Darry the stack of cards. "Maybe you are right," sniffle.
