Utility

The nanomachine facsimile device, nanofax for short, is an all purpose tool for scientific and technical personnel. Their standard function is the fabrication of items from digital blueprints using cubits as raw material. This is often referred to as a fax, though it is more akin to 3D printing than the simple paper printouts of old.
A nanofax can be customized with additional features to best fit the needs of the user, be it for medical, engineering, or even military purposes. They are capable of administering nanites, generating hardlight constructs, performing scientific analysis, and manipulating the environment in a variety of ways.

Manufacturing

The manufacture of a new nanofax can only be done at a state of the art facility specifically designed to construct them. Due to the necessary exposure to hyperspace radiation, mechanical Pandoran engineers often take on this task, as they are immune to hyperspace sickness. The roughly chair sized unit is displaced into hyperspace with only the wearable portion remaining in normal spacetime. The displaced mass has no physical affect on the wearer.

Originating in the Terran Union, the nanofax concept has been widely adopted by the galactic community. Determining who was the actual inventor of the technology is a hotly debated topic in this industry.

The nanofax is widely available to the public, though some modules are restricted from sale to unlicensed individuals. While easily found, the high cost of a nanofax compared to a simple holocom means that only professionals and serious enthusiasts purchase them regularly, though most households have at least one.

Complexity

A nanofax is an extremely complex device that few know how to properly service, even those that operate them regularly. With most of the physical structure existing in hyperspace, even gaining access to it requires special training. Because of its exotic design, the nanofax itself is one of the things a nanofax cannot fabricate.
The operation of a nanofax, however, is a user friendly experience. The holographic interface is intuitive and designed to maximize the ease at which a skilled operator can apply their talents using it. They don't even need to be charged as they draw power directly from hyperspace itself.

The development of the nanofax was the natural progression of nano-scale fabrication and hardlight projection technologies. The first nanofaxes were large handheld tools used aboard starships. Once it was possible to miniaturize the tech into a wearable form, large corporations scrambled to provide consumer options. The modern nanofax now resembles the archaic wristwatch from Terran history.
