16.4.2.1 Renfear and the Temple Report

General Summary

As the Burning Mother slips below the horizon we awaken and prepare to head us.  half of the party is going to slip around the the west of the camps and establish a new hideaway up to the mountain top north of the village.
Adler, Daemon, Dredoc, Firato, Varr'os and Zaxel travel west to the Lair of the infamous Renfear leader of the Winter Wolves.  We travel as usual under the cover of wind walking prayers and spheres of invisibility until we reach the warrens.
A natural path runs west along a rock wall to the north, rising to a wide ledge. Four large cave openings yawn in the face of the cliff, overlooking the encampment below. The caves extend into the mountainside and vanish into the darkness.
We enter the third cave from the left, the smaller cave nearest the large cave mouth, We come to a T junction after checking the tracks on the ground we i lead us to the east, the cave opens into a larger chamber this one containing piles of bones of all sorts of creatures. mostly wild animals, but a few humanoids and even a couple of giant bones can be seen within.  Knowing that we are getting closer to the lair, as most wolves eat near their home.. as do most people for that matter. Ahead we hear the sounds of direwolves conversing between themselfs echo off the walls.  I speak the prayer of Speaking with Animals and call out the Watchphrase taught to use by the winter wolves a few nights ago at the top of my voice.  My companions sigh.. realize that i have blown our chance of surprise should this encounter turn threatening and into combat.   I hope not, but some of my companions have itchy trigger and bow fingers.
We continue past the bones, shield at the ready, but no weapons drawn i lead the way.. we come to another T junction.  I ask in animal-tongue which direction from here.   Hearing no reply, i shurg and turn right leading our strike force into the center of the wolves lair.  Before us we see four winter wolves munching on various creatures.. mostly deer, but one is eating rabbits.  Can tell that hunting is bad for them with so many giants nearby.
The largest winter wolf that any of us has ever seen or read about towers over the others and addresses us in a combination of common and giant-tongue.   "THAT ISS CLOSSE EENOUUUFF..' the wolf growls at us, " I AM REN FEAR - DIVINE GUARRD HEEON OF THREMYR THEE FUR-ST JARRL  - HE WHO TRANSS FORRMED USSS FRRROMM THHEEE WOOOOORRGSS!   WHO ARRE YOOOUUUUU MOORTALS THAT DARRRRRE TRRREESSSSSPASSSSS ONN SACRED... GROUND?"
(Diplomacy checks, Handle Animal Checks aiding another yielded a few crits for each. Over the past couple of days Giggety has been getting used to her new larger dire and winter wolf forms, preferring the winter wolf, has hunted successfully and brought the meat that we see the pack eating as gifts for them.. leaving it just inside the lair so they would get user to her scent. We see her briefly in the shadows before she fades away again.)
I look around at the others, none of them look ready to speak so i try my best Oratory performance (again a 20.. dice on fire)  clearing my throat in an almost growl i say.  "I am Marshal Varr'os heir of the clan Kol Dukar. Born on the day of the first Hunter, Justicar of Erastil, servant of the Law."
Renfear snorts in common "A DWARF.. NAMED AFTERR AN ELFF, THAAT SERRVES AN ELF GODLING... YOU CLAIM TO BE OOOOUUUURRR EQUIL?"
The rest of my companions snicker as they too have said that too me over the past many moons since we left Trunau. "No, i claim to be honorable and a keeper of the laws of the wilds.  I am sure even a being of chaos like yourself.. can sense the overwhelming aura of Law that radiates from my words, and judgments."
Ren Fear continues "I CAN SENSSE YOOUURRRR TRRRUUOTH.  WE HAVE BEEEN TASSKED WITH GUARRDING THE SSHRIINEE UPP ON THE PEAAK.   THE FRRROOST GIANTS HAVE GRROWN GRREEDY.   THEY DIG DEEP IN SCARED LANDS. I KNOW YOU HAVE PAUSED THEIR DIGGING FOR NOW.  THEY HUNT  EVERYTHING.. LEAVING SCRAPS, RABBITS! FOR USS WHO HAVE BEEN HERE SINCE BEFORE THEY.  THE ONE KNOWN AS SKIRKATLA HASS BETRRAYED HERR OATHS, BRROOOKEN HER WORDS AND PRROMISES TO THE JARL.   SLAY HER.  DO NOT KILL THE CHILDREN OF THRMRY NOR DESTROY THE SHRINE ON THE PEAK.   DEAL WITH THE TEMPLE OF DEATH IT HAS BEEN DEFILED.  WE WILL WITHDRAW FROM THE VILLAGE.  YOU WILL NOT SLAY ANY WOLVES UNDER OURRR PRROOOTECTION.  IF YOU GO TO THE SHRINE REMEMBER THIS 'TREMOR ICE AND FROZEN METAL, THRMYR'S MIGHT WILL SHATTER."
"Let us make an Oath. A binding between our packs that we both will know if the other breaks their word." I offer an Oathmark to us both.   He agrees offering me a rune covered Tooth; then the wolves of the winter withdraw out the rear of the chamber slipping away silently like a winters breeze.
After the wolves withdraw i let out the sigh i didnt realize i had been holding and turn to my companions, i see that they are had either an arrow knocked, rifle ready, crossbow loaded or spells prepared to unleash fire..  "Thank you, friends for allowing me to negotiate with them.  I have troubles hunting wolves.."  a chorus "we know.."
We spend a few moments searching around the caves and find a few items which we quickly divy up before under the cover of yet another prayer of wind walking and spheres of invisibility we fly north to the once mighty temple of Thremyr, now falling into ruin and half rebuilt with strange markings and glyphs.
This colossal stone edifice appears to be sculpted from the living rock. Stairs ascend between massive columns, each carved in the form of a frost giant from a previous age, to a portico where three sets of double doors are set in the southern face of the structure. Additional columns flank the east and west sides.
As we examine the place we notice that ALOT of traffic enters through the central doorways.  Both the left and right doorways are barred from within, too deep even for Zaxel's magic of the stone to effect fully.  No magical protections are upon either the far doors.. the central one however radiates some strange aura we cannot fully identify but both Dredoc and Daemon think it to be a curse of some sorts.  KNowing that we got the scroll of removing curse just a few minutes ago.. I place my hands upon the right door handle.. hoping that my touch will discharge the Glyph of Warding to bestow its curse upon me.  There is a flash but i withstand the magics effects.  Reaching over i decide to discharge the other Glyph as well.. touching it.. for me what seems as though but a moment passes.. for the others i am frozen in time until daemon uses the magic contained within the scroll.   Dredoc scolds me for daring magics wrath.  "Better me then you."
We open the door and head inside of the spacious main chamber which occupies most of the building. The floor is white stone inlaid with countless small colored tiles, forming a mosaic of an immense black fly with the symbol of a skull on its back. Unlike the other locales in the village, the walls here are draped in dark red velvet, except for double doors to the east, west, and south. A series of steps along both sides of the north wall leads to a raised platform where a larger-than-life portrait hangs, depicting a beautiful, nude woman who is skeletal from the waist down and brandishes a large scythe, standing against the background of a moonlit, starry night. Standing candelabras adjacent to the lowest steps illuminate the room.
Between Daemon and Zaxel they quickly identify that the unholy symbol is that of Urgathoa.   We are immediately attacked by a monstrous being we found out later was named Dybellos.  She was accompanied by a pair of mummified frost giants.  The battle is fierce with Adler unloading volley after volley, firato charging upon the flying camel pingo, zaxel almost getting cut in half a couple of times but still managing to channel and harm her, myself unloading a few clips of bullets into her body, daemon using most of the fire spells and offensive magical prayers at his disposal.     We pause to catch our breaths after the battle.. pour zaxel got treated almost as baddy today by this Dybellos as i did by the Remorhaz yesterday.
