Musing on Australia

"People joke that Australia's a Dangerous place. Ooh, aah, look at all the Spiders and Snakes and everything has Claws even when its Fluffy! And, really. Let's be honest, those are all showy and flashy.
But they are right. Australia is a dangerous place. Just not for the reasons you can see. Rather, its the fact that we can't see, we don't see, and more importantly, we don't know...
You see. The Fae are everywhere. This is as much their world as our world. Humans have spread over the land, and we've constantly come into contact with the Fae in their natural habitats, even as slowly we've turned their world into our world, they havn't gone away. We just don't see them. But we know about them. Out Ancestors told us stories that warned us about the Fae. 'Don't give them anything, including your name.', and 'hang a horseshoe above your door to keep them out, they can't stand cold wrought iron.' are both lessons that we have been given from the past.
Which, really. Brings us back to Australia. Because there. There we have a problem. There, we have no stories. Because those who knew, those who told, those who understood and lived beside the Fae... We killed them. Murdered them as Savages and Barbarians before we even bothered to learn what they were saying.
And Australia is old. The Continent, the Nature there, is old. Its always been Harsh and Unforgiving. And since Fae are a reflection of Nature, the Fae of Australia are also Harsh and Unforgiving. And we know so little about them. Some, some we've managed to find from the survivors of the Aboriginal Tribes. The Ngaduri warned us of the Muldjewangk of the Murray River... The Gunnai-Kurnai enlightened us about the vampiric Yara-ma-yha-who... And of course, the Bunyip itself has many tellings... But that is a handful, and they are old. And most of them are Angry at us."
