The Free Society of Calav Mor

Less a place and more a spirit, The Free Society of Calav Mor is what happens when those with the freedom afforded by strong ships and knowledge of the seas decide to band together. A collection of pirates and privateers alike, the Free Society operates according to its own laws and customs. Though each ship and fleet operates largely independently at most times, they frequently come together during times of major world upheaval.   During these meetings, several large ships are lashed together to form a floating island in the middle of open water, this island serving as a center for not only the meeting of officers, but also a chance for crews to meet and trade amongst each other. It is common for crews to bring men and women from their favorite pleasure houses along to these meetings, providing an avenue of entertainment for the crews, and a chance for these unlikely business partners to turn a profit.   Each ship’s crew has a chance to vote on issues, ranging from whether or not the Free Society will be involved in war times and what side of each war they might choose to stand on. From there, the Captain and Quartermaster attend the meeting of the officers, and bring the resolution of their ship’s votes to the final vote among the other captains and officers. While there is no rule in place against voting against your crew’s wishes, who votes in what way is a matter of public knowledge among the Society, and no officer has maintained control of his ship, nor his own life, for long after his crew found out he voted against them.   Concentrated efforts were made on the part of several countries to rid themselves of the Free Society, but without a central location such as an island, it has proven to be a nearly impossible task. The few times a country has managed to do significant damage to the Free Society, retribution has been methodical and swift disruption of any and all naval operations. Merchant ships have been divested of their wares, military vessels have been sent to the bottom of Calav Mor, and coastal cities and towns have found themselves subject to raids in the middle of the night from several ships.   The Free Society has no figurehead; captains wield equal power among themselves, and the single attempt that was made to take control of the Free Society during peace team resulted in the Captain in question being put to the sword and chucked into the deepest waters of Calav Mor. During war times, however, if the Free Society decides to involve themselves in the wars on a particular side of conflict, a single ship is elected to take the position of the Free Society’s Flagship, its captain taking control as Fleet Admiral for the duration of the conflict.   There is a wealth of rumors and stories about the Free Society. The common folk commonly put them up on a pedestal, pointing to them as an example of what true freedom and liberty look like, while the wealthy look at them as a menace that needs to be wiped out one day, but a handy (if a bit expensive) tool to utilize the next.

Pro: Truly equal society, free agents who usually side with those least likely to do undue harm to the common folk   Con: They’re still pirates.
