Somiti

As deadly as it is beautiful, the sun is a force both venerated and feared in such hot climates, and Somiti is no different. Goddess of sunlight, her touch allows crops to grow and banishes the cold of long nights only moments before it kills a man of thirst. Daring to turn one’s gaze upon it can cause blindness, a fact which supports the theory that man will never be worthy to gaze upon the goddess herself. While Rasaz may be a deliverer of destruction and death, it is Somiti who is the beacon guiding souls to the afterlife found in the Diamond Deserts, the land of the dead. Prior to the introduction of Ahtla to the faith of those in Taqam, Somiti was believed to be the first of the three gods, and to this day she is said to be wife and sister to both Rasaz and Nayanomen.   Depicted as a shining figure with no discernable features, it is considered a great blasphemy to try to create a rendition of what Somiti might look like, and even attempting to imagine such a woman is believed to be at least a minor sin in the eyes of her church. Her symbol is a feminine hand holding a large diamond.   Somiti’s temples are frequently high towers topped with diamond-encrusted, golden icosahedrons. They capture the light of the sun and refract it in all directions, creating winking beacons for those traveling from long distances. It is said that more than one sun-weary traveler has imagined the winking pinnacle of a tower of Somiti and died in the deserts because the mirage led him astray, causing him to become lost in the dunes.   Clergy to Somiti dress in all white, and are bedecked in gold and diamonds. Only the most beautiful of women are permitted to become her clergy, and a dedicated order of paladins trained by the temple of Rasaz act as guardians of Somiti’s temples and priestesses. Offerings to Somiti are rare, and instead she is celebrated with two week-long celebrations a year, during the vernal and autumnal equinoxes. Her clergy are charged with the task of tending to the bodies of the dead and giving funerary rites to those who have passed.
