Personal history
Born 1256 Sarenith 13 (Currently 17, will turn 18 later this year)
Growing up in Tarry Town didn't leave a lot to chance concerning Garret's future. When he came of age, he was expected to work the mines like his father, and his father before him. And for the longest time, Garret went along with it. He did as he was told, helped out around town where the adults would let him and that's how things went for awhile. That all changed when a travelling bard stayed in town for a time shortly before his 15th birthday. She was a tiefling and her name was Glory, and the rest of the town seemed wary, some even disdainful. However, none of that mattered to Garret, because he'd heard her play at the inn her first night in town. From her first note, he'd become spellbound by her music. Growing up in a mining town, there wasn't much call for musicians or music. The closest they had were the hymns sung at the Temple, when they were called for. Either that or the occasional song Wispybeard would sing to himself as he hammered away in his forge. The thought of creating something as beautiful as this music with nothing but a chunk of wood with some strings tied to it was incredible. As he listened, the music seemed to tug at something deep within himself. Before he realized it, he was clapping in time with the bard's song. At first his was the only clapping in the inn, but Garret wasn't paying attention to that. His focus was the bard and her song. Before long a second set of clapping joined in and soon the inn boomed with song, clapping, and the sounds of merriment. It got to the point that the next day Illdreth had handed out reprimands regarding the disturbing of the peace.
That day, Garret had snuck off again after chores to practice his emerging magical abilities. While doing so, he'd been surprised by the arrival of the bard, who'd sensed magic going off nearby and had decided to look into it. The two of them talked for a time, most of it Garret asking about her occupation and the places she'd been and the sights she'd seen. For her part, Glory seemed to enjoy the company. Garret seemed to be one of the few people in town that didn't look at her sideways as she passed. It was a refreshing change from the norm she had come to expect during her travels. Garret asked her why she was a bard. The poor boy seemed almost confused when she responded that she'd always liked music, so she had chosen to make a career out of it. As they continued to talk, Glory recognized the same love of music was taking root within Garret and asked if he'd ever played an instrument. After a response of 'no' she motioned him over and pulled a slightly undersized lute from its position strapped to the side of her pack. It wasn't exactly halfling sized, more child sized. It had clearly seen a good number of years, but it had been remarkably well cared for. She handed it to him and gently suggested he try to play something. Garret didn't know any songs himself, save for one. The song Glory had played the previous night. He'd watched her performance intently, and could recall the finger placements. He did his best to mimic the song. There were several missed notes, and you could tell the song was a little above his skill level, but the notes he was able to hit were clear. Glory was impressed. Yes the song was a pretty basic one, but she'd only played the song once, and despite never playing an instrument before Garret had played about half the song fairly well based off memory alone.
The two of them continued to get along for the next few days. During the day, they'd talk and Garret would practice some more. At night Garret would hang out at the inn watching Glory's performances. Each night she would use a different instrument and Garret would always give his full attention. Then came her last night in town. She explained to Garret that she'd be leaving first thing in the morning. Garret was initially upset, but he understood that just staying here teaching him when he couldn't afford to pay her wasn't helping her make a living. That and he knew that after a while in Tarry Town, the atmosphere could be a bit stifling. He couldn't imagine the effect that would have on someone used to coming and going as she pleased. They said their goodbyes that night and, sure enough, when Garret woke, the town was already talking about how 'that tiefling' was finally gone. Even his pa had dropped a rather unkind remark about Glory during breakfast, and Garret suppressed (with some difficulty) the urge to say something in response. After chores, Garret once again snuck off to his usual spot. Sadly today he was all alone....or was he? Beneath the largest tree, was a wrapped bundle with a note pinned to it. Walking over and removing the note, he saw it was addressed to him. The note read:
Dear Garret,
I wanted to say thank you for these past few days. I expected Tarry Town to be another place where I was barely tolerated, but you offered me your sincere friendship. That may not seem like anything incredible from your point of view, but to me it's a glimmer of hope. If there are more people with hearts even half the size of yours, I think the future is a bit brighter than most people think. But I digress, this is for you to keep practicing. If we meet again, I expect you to have kept up with your practice. Originally it was a gift from someone that saw my love for music and wanted to nurture it. So, in turn, I give you this in the hopes that you'll bring wonderful music to people all over the world.
Your Friend,
Glory
P.S Happy Birthday!! The innkeeper's wife mentioned it to me a couple days ago. At first I didn't know what to get you, but after our time together, the answer was clear.
Garret smiled and wiped away a tear and he folded the note and tucked it away in a pocket. With everything that had been going on the past few days, he'd completely forgotten that today was his birthday. He carefully unwrapped the bundle gave a short laugh as he saw the smaller lute he'd used for practice. He held the lute close and promised to take care of it no matter what. This was probably the greatest gift he'd ever been given. Garret vowed he'd practice and get better and better until he was a great musician. Until he could stand on the same stage as Glory and play alongside her without her holding back.
