Blue Summit of the Reach

Located in the tundra of the Sea of Light's far north is a mountain range known as The Reach. Among the deep canyons, lording over a maze of ice alien enough to be like another world, is the Blue Summit of the Reach. Only Gruumsh's Fall approaches the Blue Summit in terms of size. It is still smaller and far less dangerous.

Geography

This mountain reaches skyward with raw edges, the tallest on the continent because the mountain range it is a part of is the newest. In fact it is still growing, though if this is because of tectonic activity or because of the supernatural properties it seems to have taken on are unknown.

Localized Phenomena

The mountain is known for being impossible to scale partly because the topography seems to be alive- for thousands of years since the peak's discovery the sheer cliff faces and rises of rock seem to be on the move in a completely random pattern. Rifts open and close unpredictably and sharp waves of granite will jut violently from the surface. The Reach is just as dangerous for non-naturalized lifeforms as the rest of the province, but the Blue Summit seems to reject all life. Many would-be conquerors of the Blue Summit have vanished, the flags they were seeking to plant mysteriously appearing across the valley from the Summit typically the only thing remaining of them. Far more people have been lost to the mountain than can ever possibly be known, as it seems memories of the climber often vanish with them, the fact they ever existed only re-discovered later because of physical records. Like most poorly understood things it is feared and avoided. The Blue Summit seems to prefer it that way.

Fauna & Flora

The mountain range is in an eternal state of winter and only the very highest peeks stretch beyond the eternal night of the Sea of Lights. Very few creatures that are not magically adapted exist here. Frost salamanders, remorhaz, and yetis are known to stalk the heights and surrounding area, and behir sightings have been reported. Because of the lack of sunlight there is very little in the way of plant life, leaving it an ecosystem of predators hunting predators.   Rumors of a horrors abound as well- the deep crevices that form, the ever-changing caverns with difficult to find entrances that are there one day and gone the next, and the heights swallowed in mist are believed to be home to a number of monstrous denizens that can withstand the cruelty of the Summit. Some believe the changing mountainside to be the work of giant ice worms, the tunnels filled with schemeing mind flayers, and the peeks crawling with chromatic dragons that the Chromatic Extermination missed.

Natural Resources

Those foolish enough to brave the caverns and lucky enough to return alive may find a wealth of precious gems, most particularly diamonds and sapphires, as well as raw platinum. Some explorers who managed to escape the deeper caverns with their lives tell a tale of a river of mercury deep within the mountain, bordered by cliffs lined with salt deposits that appear deceptively precious at a distance.

History

The Blue Summit was never seen by humanoid eyes until the naturalization of the drow, and it has commanded respect and fear since day 1. It is known to have been inhabited by powerful white and silver dragons, as well as enterprising reds, and when it was fought over the clashes were destructive with plenty of collateral.
