Yolar
The Yolar are a human subspecies who evolved on their homeworld Ten-gothan, and separated from humanity during the Aulyssian Expansion around 1000 years ago. They are notable for their proud demeanors, traditions of athletics, and their doctrine of expansion and exploration.
Many Yolar find it easier than humans to put on muscle, and as a result most Yolar are lithe and strong. Physical fitness is a common goal to strive for in Yolar culture, although not every individual makes it a priority. Additionally, the hands and feet of Yolar have an unusual wave-like texture that helps them grip things with greater strength as well as climb obstacles more effectively.
However, although the elders of Ten-gothan appreciated this new and simple life, the youth became starry-eyed over the idea of the original homeworld Passe-Rath. Over many more generations, a legend sprang up in the Yolar mythos: a fabled planet from which the far ancestors of the Yolar hailed, and where the Yolar would someday return to. This became the new dream of the Yolar: to return to the stars, explore new and exotic planets, and eventually find their first homeworld again.
In the past 50 years, Yolar technology has advanced to the point where they can once again travel through space. They have established settlements on many planets across the galaxy, but just a little over ten years ago they finally found Passe-Rath and believe it to be their First Homeworld. They set up colonies in the vast stretches of wilderness on the planet, but one of these colonies was built too close to the militant megacity Corlisk and provoked hostility among the locals. These encounters very nearly escalated to all-out violence between the Yolar and the Corliskans, but diaster was averted thanks to the efforts of IRUS diplomat Athry Silith who later became the Vice President of IRUS. Since then, the humans of Passe-Rath have hesitantly allowed the Yolar to hold settlements on the planet, but tensions are still uneasy between the two species.
However, this practice does not only cover working out or having muscle strength -- Yolar food is filled with balanced nutrients, and people understand well that you can't only survive off of protein. One notable dish, and one that has spread to Passe-Rath, is Yolar steak and roots; a platter that includes steak from a Thoran, a mammal found on Ten-gothan similar to a cow, dressed in a variety of spices, and served with a variety of root vegtables chopped up and cooked. This dish can be found in Corlisk as well as Ten-gothan, due to the slowly growing population of Yolar there.
While there are not many desserts in Yolar cuisine, one of them is the Corata. This dessert is made of Thoran milk and sugar whipped into a thick cream, left to chill and harden, and served with small servings of sweetbread. Corata is often served in small amounts as a treat after lunch.
Another important Yolar tradition are the Games of Ten-gothan. This event, held every three years, is a series of contests of strength, speed, and skill that any Yolar can participate in. Trophies are awarded to the winners of each contest. Contest categories include navigating underwater obstacle courses (typically coral reefs), climbing, running, Thoran wrangling, taming wild birds, agility (usually in the form of parkour), and swordfighting. While all of these contests are separate, there is one contest that stands above them all: the Kamora il Ten-gothan, or Trials of a Beautiful World. The Kamora combine every challenge into one contest of multiple stages, where each stage is harder than the last. Initially, 32 participants are selected, and each trial, half of the participants are eliminated who perform the worst. There are 5 trials in total, with the last trial only having 2 opponents. The winner of the Kamora is celebrated by the Yolar, wins glory, and oversees future Kamora.
Biology
Yolar have the same basic build and skin coloring as core humans, but their hair is more coarse and can take a range of white to bright orange hues, although dye is not uncommon for Yolar wishing to express themselves. They typically have solid black irises and slightly lighter black pupils. Many Yolar find it easier than humans to put on muscle, and as a result most Yolar are lithe and strong. History
While the exact records are lost to time, it is believed that nearly a thousand years ago a ship full of settlers left the megacity Paergeon to find a new home on another planet. Yolar folk stories say that these settlers in particular had become disillusioned with the technology-pervaded environment of Passe-Rath, and wanted to find a place to start anew and leave the overabundance of technology combined. They found a planet teeming with life and rich soil, overlooked by tall mountains and underscored by full aquifiers, and decided to land there -- a planet that, over the course of hundreds of years, came to be known as Ten-gothan, or Beautiful World in the Yolar language that evolved alongside its people. They built low-technology homes and towns and worked the soil with their hands, climbing the mountains to harvest the fruit found there. Over generations and generations, they slowly lost the remnants of the technology of Passe-Rath they brought with them, until ships stopped coming and going from the planet altogether. However, although the elders of Ten-gothan appreciated this new and simple life, the youth became starry-eyed over the idea of the original homeworld Passe-Rath. Culture
The Yolar have a rich and storied culture with many traditions, practices, and customs. The most prevalent of these is the focus that the Yolar put on staying healthy and strong; this tradition most likely originated in the fact that when they first moved to Ten-gothan, they had to work many fields with few people, as so each person had to pull their own weight working. As a result of this tradition, Yolar tend to have naturally longer lifespans. However, this practice does not only cover working out or having muscle strength -- Yolar food is filled with balanced nutrients, and people understand well that you can't only survive off of protein. Holidays
Some Yolar holidays are gaining popularity across parts of Passe-Rath due to their wild celebrations and fun traditions. One of these such holidays is the Pella Palot (Day of Exuberance in Yolar), held on Beiryess 58 every two years. On Pella Palot, colorful blue-and-orange banners are lifted over streets and buildings, food is shared freely, domesticated animals are let out to play, and lots of alcohol is drunk. No one on Ten-gothan really knows how this holiday started, and stories about its origin are numerous and almost always wildly conflicting, but a common joke is that the people who created Pella Palot really just wanted an excuse to drink and be merry. Pella Palot has gained momentum in western Corlisk due to its proximity to Yolar settlers; many humans have started celebrating it, in true Pella Palot spirit, as an excuse to party.Another important Yolar holiday is called Tuelom (no direct translation). This day marks the death of a beloved community leader named Pama Loriss who lived some 120 years ago, a psionic Yolar who used her abilities to bring together communities and foster peace and respect. On this day, banners of white and black are hung in towns and from balconies, and psionic Yolar are expected to help their community in the spirit of Pama Loriss. Non-psionic Yolar also pitch in to help on Tuelom, and on this day people often construct homes, donate money, or visit elders.
Tuelom is celebrated more on Ten-gothan than it is on Yolar settlements on other worlds, as with smaller populations come smaller numbers of psionics. However, there are pockets of Yolar in the megacity Rockwater who are starting to celebrate the holiday, as well as in Corlisk.
Beauty Ideals
Just as human beauty ideals have changed greatly over time, so have Yolar ideals. However, the current standard of Yolar beauty cuts a striking figure. Bright orange hair and clear skin are attractive to Yolar, and sharp, alert eyes are another feature of a healthy individual. Yolar fashion features bright oranges and blues as well as crisp whites in fabric, and metal accessories complement the look of the stylish modern Yolar. Deep voices in both males and females are desirable, although this is not universal. In particular, the Yolar settlement that borders Corlisk has taken on a style of its own. Some youth there dye their hair dark and wear sharp shoulder pads to mimic the popular Corliskan style, but the typical muted clothing palette of Corlisk has instead been replaced by the bright colors of Ten-gothan. Some insecure youths raised around humans wear gloves to hide the wave-like textures on the palms of their hands, but some embrace it, wearing lots of bracelets and rings to draw attention to their hands. Some rebellious Yolar youths even forego shoes to better grip the gates and walls they scale to evade IRUS officers after vandalizing buildings -- such hooligans have been dubbed "Wrappers" after the footwraps they wear on the arches of their feet.
