Recondite

Insular and secretive are the mages of the dead land they call Celotene in their obscure language. A land as dark and cold as its inhabitants, it has been shrouded by eternal night ever since Mercator and his cronies settled it nearly 200 cycles ago. Yet somehow the mages of that bleak, lifeless realm thrive there, I know not how. I theorize it has something to do with the magical rings their leaders carry, for they seem to halt aging before the crystal embedded in the ring dims. We have not been able to find any of these rings on the menials accompanying the mages, which does not surprise me at all. It begs the question: how do the slaves survive in that dead land? Nevertheless, I have gleaned some knowledge about their culture and society from my investigations. Theirs is a society of might makes right, where a mage has the right to duel any other citizen over any matter imaginable. These duels are formal and legally binding, leaving those without magical talent at a clear disadvantage. This bothers the Recondites not at all, they even seem oddly proud of this outrageous legal system of theirs. That being said, never have I seen such powerful mages as those hailing from Celotene, nor have I seen them in such great numbers. They are a powerful nation and an ever-looming threat to their neighbours, no doubt about it.

Recondite:   ASI: +4 Int, -1 con   Occult Arcana: You are in possession of three magical items that certify you as a mage of Celotene - an Aeternalith Ring, a Vitalith Ring and a magical focus.
  • Aeternalith Ring: A silver ring of simple make, inlaid with an amethyst gemstone. This magical jewel puts the bearer into biostasis, removing the need to eat, drink or sleep and granting the bearer immunity to aging, disease or poison. However, the bearer cannot rest naturally or recover hit points doing so.
  • Vitalith Ring: A gold ring inlaid with an emerald. This ring is used to counteract the Aeternalith Ring's negative effects. The bearer of this ring is under the effects of Regenerate but age at a rate of 1 year per hour. If the bearer wears both of these rings at the same time, then only these effects apply: ignore food, drink, sleep, immunity to aging, disease and poison, regenerate 1 hit point per turn. In addition, the bearer of both rings can meditate instead of sleeping similar to Elves.
  • Magical Focus: These devices take many forms but are made for the sole purpose of granting the bearer the ability to cast spells. Any creature that attunes to this focus can use it to cast spells, even if they don't have prior spellcasting ability. Recondite Wizards use these foci instead of spellbooks and do not need material components to cast any spell (even those that have a cost) this way. A Recondite Wizard who loses their focus also loses their spellcasting ability completely. Wizards can create backup foci using a gemstone worth atleast 100 gp. Constructing a new focus takes a week of downtime.
Age: Ageless, unless separated from their Aeternalith Ring.   Size: 5-6 ft, medium size.   Speed: 30   Languages: Arcane + 2 languages of your choice.
