Halfling

Friendly, laid-back and extremely lucky, Halflings are a common sight in many human towns across the world, especially in agrarian villages. They are a welcome sight in any upstanding society, for in my wanderings near and far I have never seen a Halfling that showed any kind of malice towards another person. This makes me doubt the theories of my colleagues, who believe Halflings to be some magically altered form of Human; they may look Human (to a point) but they do not think like Humans do. They are exceptionally concerned with how they are perceived by others correcting any faux pas with utmost haste and humble nobility. They claim this is due to their parents "raising them up properly" but the consistency of it leaves me questioning the likelihood of that. Additionally, all Halflings seem obsessed with their pedigree, seemingly knowing the names of all their ancestors innumerable generations back, all leading to the primogenitor of their race. What I find odd is that the name of this particular Halfling is always known, proudly put forward but never the same if you would ask a different Halfling. You would think the usually courteous Halfling would take offense on someone misremembering their common ancestor's name, but they never do. It is like they don't even notice it themselves! One of them called him Chanister Oswell, the second swore it was Callum Harken of Swesterswill and the third said it was Cormyn Hamwick-Sorrister. What is most baffling about this, is that the story is mostly the same, only the name changes! Did this primogenitor have an especially long name that the Halflings only say parts of? Or is it perhaps a shibboleth of some kind; a password or a code for something? This is starting to give me a headache.

Sarrykay, was it? I'll gladly tell ya about the Greatest Halfling to ever live, Ser Chanister Oswell, when he singlehandedly saved that Longshanks town from the mean old dragon all those years ago. He's the granpappy of all Halflings mind you and all Halflings look up to him. Come on in, I'll put the kettle on and tell you the story after.
