Massacre at Daeder Echo Station

The massacre at Daeder Echo Station refers to the corruption of Chairman Grunmorok Merryspine, the head of Bruparth Academy's Automata Facility, and his subsequent murders of colleagues and students within the underground facility.

Background

From year 13900 to 13902 A.Dw., Bruparth Academy discovered, secured, and settled within the Daeder Echo Station with the eventual goal of researching the theoretical Echo Experiment. Grunmorok Merryspine was appointed as chairman of the facility, and he was accompanied by two other professors, a small staff, and four students from the academy.

On the day 13901 Thatthil 45 A.Dw., dubbed by the academy as "Automata Connection Day", a portal to Mechanus opened up within the facility. Merryspine was amongst those who conversed with Automata visitors and chose to travel to the unknown plane. By the end of day, he was the only one to return.

Merryspine's Corruption

Grunmorok Merryspine was known to be a kind and invaluable professor by the members of Bruparth, but his experience in Mechanus warped him. Over the course of several seasons, he was noted to have a change in personality and grew an obsession in his work. In particular, Merryspine was determined to replicate the Automata's self-replication magic upon dwarves, going so far as to experiment upon his own students.

Student's Journal

13901: Totman 83
The Chairman is super nice. He spent some time helping me on my telekinetics homework while Flaskmail was at the main campus.

13901: Akath 72
The chairman has been very strict lately. We need to spend most of our time doing work now. Also his experiments have gotten weird. Like he has us use metal implants to control animals, whether living or dead. I think the goal is to have the animals act alive even without biological functions. Seems like necromancy, but I suppose it's technically not.

13902 Totman 37
Well things have gotten a bit too much. Heady had to place a rod into his arm while I had to try and move it. It went really bad.

13902 Totman 42
I've decided to leave. I tried to get Heady to do the same, but he still thinks this place is important.

The details of Merryspine's final experiment are unknown, but it resulted in the physical transformation of his body. His flesh remained, but it was implanted with a myriad of metal hardware.

Massacre

On 13902 Isram 17, Grunmorok Merryspine emerged from his lab in his corrupted, automata form, and he rampaged through the facility. Several chambers were coated in a thick layer of dust as he tore through furniture and deflected explosive weapons. Along the way, Merryspine the Automata killed nearly everyone within the facility.

After several failed attempts at defeating Merryspine, two survivors were finally able to trap and bury him within the floor. They then resealed the echo station, but not before adding a new system of locked chambers that would obstruct any future attempt to release him.

On that day, I arrived here after hearing from my daughter the atrocities being committed by the chairman, but my arrival was too late. Merryspine the Automata emerged from his lab with a psychotic hatred towards the academy, and he killed nearly everyone here. Professor Wyvernback was the lone survivor, standing just outside the upper gallamantium door and doing everything he could to keep Merryspine sealed within the facility. With Wyvernback's strength fading, and knowing our power was no match for the abomination, we came up with a plan. Within the vault there is a deadly trap system that I disabled long ago, and Merryspine never knew about it. So we lured him into the vault and set off the trap.

He survived. The lightning from the trap significantly slowed him down, but he would certainly escape very soon. So we made one final attempt. We rigged the Gift of Mechanus, the ring of 1000 lightning storms, to the redirect and empower the trap's energy source. This bolstered the restraints upon Merryspine, rendering him unable to move. Over the coming days, we filled in the vault with brick and mortar as Merryspine the Automata lie motionless within the lightning.
