Portal horns

In the far north, over the icy windswept tundra, wanders a most mysterious creature. Taller than the trees that still cling to their lives, they move with a royal demeanour across the land with their families in search for food, and never seem to be bothered by anything.   If you were to come across on of these gentle beasts, you better show it the respect it deserves, or the gods themselves will punish you for your insolence.   It is said that sometimes, when a male gets old enough, their antlers grow so big that they form perfect circles. If you are lucky enough to find one of these dead by natural means, the portal in the horns will show you the whole universe.
In many parts of the world, Portal Horns are seen as a mere myth, the thing of legends, but they are very much real. These huge, furry herbivores live in small family groups, usually consisting of one male and a few females and their kids, although it is not uncommon for the offspring to stay, regardless of gender, and take their own mates while staying in the group.   Both male and females sport antlers, although the males' get much bigger, and are used more for impressing females and intimidate other males rather than actual fighting. This preference by the females for big horns is believed to be the source of the "portals". With age the antlers grow into a circular shape, intertwining themselves.   These antler circles are very valuable and it is seen as very impressive to own one, which means that even though it is strictly forbidden to hunt adult males there is a lot of poaching going around.
