The Chines

The "Chines" are a set of hastily constructed slums raised in a clearing south-east of Roeswerp proper in the wake of the fall of Kahnstadt  Built around then already-existing infrastructure used by the burgeoning mining operation pioneered by House Essler, the new district was afforded few resources due to the troubles faced by the Empire and quickly became a dwelling for the poorest folk of Roeswerp, as well as the centre of much of its industry -- abattoirs, blacksmiths, tanneries and so on fill the air with a foul-smelling smog that the dwellers must suffer. The largest service entrance into the Underducts also exists in the area, which does not help with the smell. The slums are poorly guarded, with the few auxiliaries posted there tasked with protecting the area from outside forces rather than specifically enforcing imperial law there -- even though Roeswerp could easily bring order to the area, to invest coin in more regular patrols is seen as a frivolity by most senior officials.   The Chines are named after the jutting spires at the base of the nearby mountains, where crude adamantine can be mined in great quantities, though some say it might have been named after the act of chining due to the local butchers.
