Rootknowing & the Fey
Rootknowing, known also as the old ways or the timeless art, is a bygone belief system practiced deep in the wilds of the Ocemi Empire, most prominently in the provinces of the Kahnwold and the Sladecartann.
Once perhaps a dominant religion across Cryros, this practice fell into a harsh decline with the simultaneous growth of the Empire and the Church of Sol Imperii after a series of heavy-handed campaigns of repression, driving the now-few practicioners deeper into the woods and swamps, where they now form small communities known as moots, the most prominent of which is known as the Grovetender's Moot said to meet in the northern Kahnwold.
The practice of Rootknowing is quasi-religious and focused around a deep communion with the natural world and the fey that exist as its caretakers, primarily through drawing magic from the roots of nearby fauna and haruspexy of wildlife, a savage practice that is said to have allowed the followers of the old ways some knowledge of the future and even in some cases precognition.
It is said that the more radical druidic sects practice human sacrifice, particularly of Sol Imperii's priests, as a revenge for the destuction of their culture and to use their blood in profane rites deep in the darkest depths of the woods. An example of one of these malignant groups is known as the Cult of the White Void, a Nowaken sect that worship that the natural forces of cold and entropy must be appeased by the mortal races, and desire to one day bring the biting rime of the northern wastelands down on the eastern provices.
Some practitioners of Rootknowing instead revere a specific fey entity instead of the world itself, forming sects to revere creatures such as the Bolonik of the Sladecartann or the Lesovik of the Kahnwold.
