Escane-Vnutpolya

Formerly hailed as “the Flat Stretch” by scholars of bygone-ages, Escane-Vnutpolya - as it stands, today - was built undeniably off of the blood of slaves, serfs and servants: that much is well-known. Historic debate however, both in courts and colleges, centres primarily on why; the shadow-casting aqueducts that transport need never have been there, save to create the agricultural veterans’ state of Escane out of the dry mud of the Stretch.   The leading theory - though, to speak it within Great Ocem’s walls is considered a social faux pas - is that the clerical, superstitious, near-theocracy of Ocem’s administration wished to settle many thousands of blooded, shock-struck veterans away from the capital.   Even its outskirts were considered too close for comfort.   Thus, by decree of Emperor Deoscav III, the Flat Stretch (then unorganised into a formal province) would be named Escane – transformed into the bustling hive of gold fields and manorial feudalism we see at present, with acres given according to rank on exit of Legionary service.   A second theory, however, roots itself even deeper – the decision of Emperor Deoscav III may have been inspired by the need to vacate many hundreds of military veterans in league with the Legate Hastov, popular among even the praetorian guard, away from arms’ reach of the Imperial Residence. Whilst giving toasts to Hastov in privacy, so the thought went, they would be too drunk off of the nectar of submission to act against the Emperor.   Naturally, to speak of such a theory - one which places the very progenitors of the Escane province as would-be traitors to the nation - is a blasphemy to its inhabitants.
