Prancyne, Alnea

  • Prancyne is a vine that grows solely within the Frostlands and serves as a primary food source for the Frostfolk. It’s long, thin, and has giant leaves that are larger than a human but are also incredibly thin and brittle.
  • There are no natural predators to Prancyne, however, their numbers have stayed even across nearly a thousand years of written record, leading people to believe that the Frostfolk are controlling their numbers and preventing devasting outbreaks.
  • Prancyne, while edible, gives little in the ways of nutrition and flavor, and people who have tried it claim it tastes like spinach but more bitter.
  • While humans dislike the taste and texture of Prancyne, the Frostfolk love it, often giving each other gifts that contain Prancyne related foods, such a Prancyne, and fish rolls, and Prancyne wrapped snow rabbit.
  • Frostfolk has been seen farming Prancyne by controlling their growth and harvesting at the right time, which proves that they are capable of farming instead of hunting.
  • Scholars have tried to bring samples and buds to less harsh climates, however, they hardly ever survive the voyage overseas to warmer weather, and if they do, they never bud.
  • It is believed this is because the combination of snow, wind, soil and other hidden factors are to blame.

Growth stages

  • Day 1-6 in the sprouting stage, where all the bitterness hasn’t arrived. Humans like the taste of this stage the best.
  • Day 7-19 in stage 1 growth, it grows extremely fast during this time, often growing 4 feet per day.
  • Day 20-30 in stage 2 growth, growth slows tremendously, and red-white buds begin to form at the end of each leaf, somehow not breaking its fragile structure.
  • Day 31-45, stage 3, buds form, and self-pollinate, before dropping their buds and dying quickly, often crumbling and turning into a fertilizer for the next generation of Prancyne.
