Whitestone
Having been sailing for several weeks , my crew and I expected to see land any day - I knew there just had to be something out there other than Glidaes. That day, the 5th of Dolgre, I finally heard the cry I had been waiting for. "Land ho! Land ho!" I rushed up to the deck turning my head in the direction the man in the crows nest indicated and, I must assume, along with the rest of the crew was immediately captivated. I had expected to see a beach with trees a few hundred feet upshore, a cliff face with a waterfall, or even city built right on the shoreline. The white wall of stone that I found myself gazing upon, however, was unexpected. Even more unexpected was that the wall seemed to radiate light - not in the way that finely polished marble did but as though the light was coming from the wall. It was unexpected indeed.
Properties
Physical & Chemical Properties
Whitestone is a pure white, non-porous stone cool to the touch regardless of the weather and, when uncut is as smooth as glass. Whitestone has natural anti-discoloration properties and never appears dirty despite the ravages of time. While one would expect whitestone to reflect light (similar to how shined marble does), whitestone seems to absorb light instead and, regardless of the brightness of light around it, emits a soft glow.
Additionally whitestone can not be shaped with, destroyed by or otherwise altered with Magic.
Geology & Geography
All whitestone is sourced from a series of small whitestone islands off the southern coast of Glidaes in the Plynas ocean.
Life & Expiration
Despite some of the whitestone statues being centuries old, there is no indication that they deteriorate or erode.
History & Usage
History
From the initial discovery, whitestone has been used primarily for monuments and statues becuase of its ability to defy the elements and erosion. It wasn't until the Age of Magic began however that whitestone really earned its place when sculpters discovered that the stone was impervious to Magic and could not be shaped or destroyed by Magic. As a result the value of the stone increased exponentially and the stone shifted from primarily being used for monuments by the Monarchy to being used by the wealthy as a status symbol.
Discovery
Captain Olyn Dugaw and the crew of the Esmarza were the first documented discoverers of the Whitestone Islands, a small cluster of islands in the middle of the Plynas Ocean that seemed to just spring from water without any attached land. Unfamiliar with the new stone, Captain Dugaw and crew cut off several large blocks that would complete their journey with them.
Byproducts & Sideproducts
Scraps may be sold as lights. While not bright enough to use in place of a candle, scraps of whitestone are common gifts to expecting mothers to be used as a light in the night.
