Age of Exploration

A new age begins

So, you want to know about the age of exploration?

Our story begins over a thousand years ago, in a region known as the Laris Isle, an island off the coast of Nitera; best known for its natural beauty. The day was like any other, but to those of the magical arts, it was the day that magic died. It sounds melodramatic I know, but you must understand, magic no longer seemed to work—at least not like it should—and the followers of Niesis suddenly lost connection to their deity; the wind and the waves.

What changed you ask? The only difference was the appearance of a giant storm now called by historians as the 1,000-year storm.

There are many theories about what happened to Niesis, and what caused the storm. Many believe that Laris was battle ground against a force of evil with the gods cutting the region. Who or what that force of evil was, seems to have been lost to time. This might be the common belief, however, there are those amongst the followers of Niesis that believe that there is an inexplicable connection between the rise of the storm and Niesis influence on the world diminishing.

What do I believe, you ask … that is beside the point, shall we move onto more recent times?

It was only about 30 years ago that the storm started to show signs of easing and within 10 years the storm cleared, revealing the region now called Storms Eye. The Laris Isle, the once beautiful land, shattered into multiple smaller islands, seeming to flow out from the mainland in a swirl-like pattern.

Thus, the age of exploration begun.

Quickly, expeditions were sent by nobles and monarchs alike to explore this once lost region, looking for riches, interesting artefacts, and to piece together what really happened at Storms Eye. Religious pilgrims also found their way to the region, claiming their deity played some grand role in the 1,000-year storm, or whatever happened. Sects of Niesis see the end of the storm as either a sign of the evil passing or an omen that Niesis has been weakened.   Whatever the case, there is only a fraction of the region that has been truly explored and no one can explain why some of the islands seem to be out of place. First explorer, Elas Leoralei, saw sights you would not believe. Charred and cracked islands right by a chain of frozen tundra islands. A giant lake at the heart of Storms Eye with rivers that appear to spiral out from the lake.

And you say that you are to be part of one these expeditions? well, I wonder what ancient wonders and truths you will uncover in Storms Eye. I wish you luck and hope you make your way back to tell me tales of your journey.
