Sylus Oghmaeus' Background
Birth & Younger Years
Halna Kalis lived in the rural farmlands of middle Myrsia when she became aware of her pregnancy. Unmarried and un-wowed by any man, she came to understand the miracle of her child. Upon his birth Sylus was fair and small. To his mothers relief and disappointment, Sylus seemed like a normal, albeit small, healthy child. As he grew so did his quirks and magical talents start to appear. Halna never received clear signs from any beings as to the purpose of the child's creation. She sought answers in the Northern Far-Groves, where old guilds of knowledge and the Voidal Fathers of Morthgar resided. They struck her a deal. "Deliver the child unto us. Let us raise and educate him for two decades. We will then return him to you, with purpose and focus." She agreed to this, and left the child with the Wisemen.
Sylus was taught more knowledge every year during his stay at Morthgar, than any man knew, in the span of decades. Gripped by the power of the written and spoken word, Sylus sought purpose within the vast libraries of Sarân Am Mortgal. The inner chambers. This knowledge, however, was forbidden. Caught in the act, by Zuklan the Elder Father, he was cast out of The Circle, to the great dismay of the many fathers. He was their protégé and their project. Now lost to them.
Sylus first tried to find his mother, but her whereabouts was unknown. Utilizing his vast knowledge, youth and powers of illusion, Sylus managed to acquire the attention of a local court Wizard by the name of Uluris Titem. Great and powerful, he advised the royals of Myrsia, as a helpful aide from the Academy of Brightscar. Fascinated by Sylus' demand for an explanation and guide of the Language of the Gods, Uluris took him under his wings.
Becoming a Sage
Brightscar, rarely taking in new pupils, unless wealthy or powerful in family or magical ability, did not gracefully accept Sylus. Although skilled and cunning, he was never strong in destruction or deadly spells. His power resided in illusions and learning capabilities. Should he not understand an item and its origin, a spell or any other historical importance, he would absorb knowledge on the subject at the greatest of haste. And so he dedicated his magical capabilities to contain more function than form. Mending items and restoring readable scrolls became his forté. His interests were of little use to the school, and his magical abilities had little weight in times of war. He showed very little promise to the Sages, but through recommendation from Uluris, was granted a scholarship in the school of Illusion.
Bent on discovering the pure power of language, Sylus reiterated and calligraphed many a book during his studies. Few eyes have seen as beautiful a handwriting as his. He also became so adept at reading documents, that a fell deal or dishonest contract was easily spotted. Unfortunately, this led him from the path of spellbinding which furthered less proficiency in the arcane practices. During his studies in the arcane arts of illusion and conjuration, he became best of friends with his familiar, a black Nightowl, with a fierce demeanor and red squinting eyes named Celd, and his fellow student Baelmon Sattan.
He took the vow of sages in his forties. He was allowed access to the Sepulcher of Midnight, also known as the Temple of Locution. A temple containing many legends of forgotten races and their respective languages. Sylus, together with his former teacher Uluris and the temple scribe Possimox Mallam, founded the Obscure Order of Bhasha. An order committed to the ideals of the sacred word.
The Obscure Order of Bhasha.
Given very little funding by the Brightscar Academy itself, Uluris, Possimox, Baelmon and Sylus had to organize and finance their many expeditions themselves. The cost of security detail, books and general travel costs could hardly be covered by the funding, and so Baelmon and Sylus were forced to seek the occasional odd job amongst the villages and minor cities during their travels. They spent many years teaching the common folk and lesser arcanist in safe practice of magic and knowledgeable details concerning governance. Slowly they crept ever closer to their goals.
Having learned by the Sylvan, the existence of the Abyssal Language, Sylus brought all but Possimox to the Fissure of a Thousand Sparks. It had been recited to him by a Sylvan poet, that deep in the cracks of arcane lightning, beings of the forgotten language could be found. Having spent years with the Order trying to find its location, their eagerness overcame their caution. Delving deep into the natural embodiment of the Nine Hells, Sylus and the Order found the seat of the Corrupted Tomekeeper. Baelmon, receiving visions of their deaths, pleaded Sylus to abandon the cause and leave. But he would not sway from the path. Facing the Tomekeeper, Sylus asked for the ability to understand the language of the gods. The Tomekeeper merely laughed. The cacophonous cave of power were fizzling as the tensions of the party grew. Descending from his rotten throne with book in hand, reaching a hand in false friendship, the Tomekeeper robbed Baelmon of his soul, devouring it in mere seconds. Uluris realized their folly and fought with little help from Sylus the creature of the Abyss. Releasing massive waves of energy however, took a toll on his body, and left Uluris in a weakened state of paralysis, and he would no longer walk the roads of man the same. Sylus, seizing the tome of the Keeper and escaping with Uluris, managed to transcribe and learn the Abyssal language. But Baelmon's death was in vain, and Uluris sacrifice for naught, for it was not the Language of Power.
Determined to find the language and restore Uluris body, Sylus sought out on his own, assisted by Possimox scriptures in the Libraries of Brightscar where he remained.
Now having spent countless years in the many cultures of the world, he had been tipped of by Possimox. A Fire Scribe in the secluded city of Kelpool had found an ancient scrolls. A scroll containing glyphs unseen by any of his kind before.
Now an old man, Sylus drifted down the rivers of Middle-Myrsia to redeem his mistakes and uncover this mystery.
