When the Systems Alliance first encountered the Vesk Imperium, war seemed inevitable; The Vesk Imperium was a highly militarized empire, colonizing rapidly and expanding aggressively. Armies were levied and fleets were scuttled, each side preparing for a conflict. Fortunately, in what came to be a defining moment for the Systems Alliance, neither side ever fired a shot. While the Vesk Imperium had seemed to be a violent aggressor on a stellar scale, in truth the Vesk Imperium leadership was mostly worried about a lack of order in the stars and was trying to secure itself against possible invaders. Choosing to avoid confrontation, the Vesk Imperium signed a defensive pact. Rather than starting a war, the Vesk Imperium became a staunch ally of the Systems Alliance.
The Vesk Imperium consists of twelve primary planets, as well as a significant number of smaller colonies and space stations. They are a highly disciplined culture, with an emphasis on loyalty and the sovereignty of your superiors. While on the surface they proclaim their government and social structures as meritocracies, reality is more muddled than that. Political alliances, capital and relationships are just as important in the Vesk Imperium as everywhere else. Their system of justice is a harsh, rigid one, where crime is punished by temporary enslavement to the state. More humiliating for a Vesk, criminals are disbarred from military service for the remainder of their life.
The Vesk Imperium has become increasingly integrated in the Systems Alliance, with their soldiers having permanent presences within System Alliance space in several strategic positions. After the Torro massacre, the Vesk Imperium was one of the leading proponents of making an ethical intervention against the Gor empire and in recent years, they have been suggesting making a similar move against the Realms of Abraxos.
