  An ancient order, the Techpriests are as much interstellar empire as they are religion. The techpriests are a generally mysterious order, dissuading outsiders from joining. Their purpose appears to be the spread of technological advancement and the uplifting of species, traveling across the galaxy and spreading their message. While the techpriests often allude to a past of military and economic might, the techpriests now encompass only their small handful of cathedral planets and their ships, while certainly powerful, are old and worn. The Cathedral Worlds themselves are closed to outsiders and sophisticated technology bars both magical and scientific scans, shrouding their lives in darkness.
Nevertheless, the Techpriests are relevant for one important reason; They alone possess the knowledge of how to create Drift Beacons, a necessary part of interstellar travel. To gain access to Drift technology, all a nation needs to do is submit to the Progenitor Black Science Prohibitions, a length document describing a series of technologies which must be outlawed, and to let Techpriest Inquisitors hunt down anyone who breaches these agreements.

Tenets of Faith

The list of technologies forbidden is long and a great deal of them are so far outside the realms of current scientific knowledge that it is not even known what it is. The list includes, but is not limited to;

  General Artificial Superintelligence
Self-replicating molecular machines
Universal constructors
Temporal tampering
The Drift
Dimensional Tunneling
Extremely high energy particle physics
Universal simulation
Universal geometry deformation

Sects

While the techpriests themselves do not invite in outsiders, there exist numerous non-official sects, seeking to emulate the perceived wisdom and knowledge of the techpriests.
The largest one calls themselves "Curates Of The Machine" and is primarily a conservative dwarven cult. This cult tries to both curtail new innovation while simultaneously attempting to reverse-engineer the workings of the techpriests. Their true devoted claim to have the ability to hear the whispers of machines and that heeding it grants them access to secret insights. While most scientists consider it ridiculous, star captains have noted that the Curates do tend to have an uncanny knack for getting the most out of engines.
