Eclipse-class Destroyer

The Eclipse class is the most modern production design in the Union Naval Corps, entering service in 2274 with circa 35 active. As a dedicated point-defense ship, the Eclipse is studded with domes housing computer-controlled turrets, forming blackened hexagons across the hull. Otherwise, the Eclipse and her sister ships broadly follow the design philosophy of modern Union craft. The Eclipse class's claim to fame is its unique split-beam array; each laser emitter typically feeds combinations of up to six point-defense mounts, but to deliver a hit against larger ships, the emitter's output can be rerouted into a single, larger turret. While the Eclipse is well-loved by naval organizers for its flexibility, it has a terrible reputation with maintenance crews for the unreliable splinter array, and the vessels instead often rely on their secondary kinetic batteries for point defense.
