Global Union

The Global Union is a social democracy managed by an anonymous directorate, a lunar congress, and a unified court of law. Its sphere of influence includes Earth and Luna.

Directorate

The Directorate is the Global Union's governing council, elected by the Union Congress. Its members are anonymous to the public, but known to and held accountable by the Congress and Court.
The public can see voting records and policy decisions, but not identities. It is designed to avoid authoritarianism, personality cults, and ego-driven politics, and encourage meritocratic streamlined decision making.

Union Congress

The Union Congress is the Global Union's body of elected representatives. The Congress itself elects and oversees the Directorate, passes legislation, and authorizes funding.
It is comprised of multiple ideological blocs, which often compete or collaborate in policy formation.

Union Court

The Union Court is the Global Union's judicial branch. One-third is appointed by the Congress, one-third by local governments, one-third by the Directorate.
It is non-partisan with strict vetting, and responsible for legal interpretation and the power to overturn laws.

Public Equity Trust

The Public Equity Trust owns all major enterprises; profits are distributed monthly to citizens as Universal Basic Income. Citizens can found private ventures, but equity is gradually ceded to the Trust beyond specific valuation thresholds, as defined in the Civic Corporate Charter.
Universal healthcare and housing are guaranteed as public rights. A number of special innovation zones support deregulated economic regions with more entrepreneurial freedom.

Military

The Global Union military operates under a civic-ethos mandate. War is viewed as humanity’s greatest failure and is a last resort only. Branches include the Space Force, Air Force, Army, and Navy.
Joint Chiefs of Staff report to the Directorate. Civilian and congressional oversight is enforced by the Congressional Liaison Corps (CLC), which embeds civilian watchdogs at every level, and maintains an elite force that answers to the Union Congress.

Controversies

The nation states that formed the Global Union committed war crimes during the Third World War by destroying the entire Russian Federation using orbital kinetic bombardment over a 10-minute period.
The Global Union was accused of similar atrocities on half of Mars during the early days of the Siliconian War. Discontent with the action and the lack of voting rights for Martian citizens led to a number of uprisings and Martian independence.
