Sunderbell

"It might not be the biggest of cities but I'd wager its the loudest. Not the usual noise of a busy city you understand, not like here, Sunderbell is... well its in tune with itself! Imagine a place where everyone is pitch perfect and they all love to sing. That's Sunderbell"
  • Unknown man speaking to a friend about his visit to Sunderbell.
  •   The capital city of Jostoli, Sunderbell is the seat of the High Toller, leader of Jostoli, and chosen of Buval the last chime. To truly understand Sunderbell you must understand their god a little, Buval of the last chime was in life a bell ringer, his story is one of the best remembered of those who are now gods. He loved music and the bells he rang more than anything else, but he was willing to sacrifice that to save his city, and at that moment was able to when he became a god.   Music and sound are at the centre of every life in Sunderbell, the entire city is always alive with music. there are none alive on Spindle who would disagree that there are no instruments greater than those crafted here. For obvious reasons bells are the most common of the instruments here and are everywhere you look, but all manner of instruments are made in the city, from drums to bagpipes, and flutes to harpsichords, if you can use them to make music then they are made somewhere in the city.

    History

    Clearbell and the Sundering

When Buval was alive the city was known as Clearbell, it was even then famous for its bells and the arc bell was its most famous, its tone could be heard for miles and was used to draw all the people from the villages into the city for various reasons. The story goes that a vicious bandit gang came into the town one night and planned on using it to bring their marks to them. A sound plan that was sure to work if it were not for Buval who slept in the bell tower, his hammock hanging in the rafters. he was woken by the bandits and on hearing their plan knew what he must do, silence the bell. and so he climbed up the tower, reaching the top just as the bandit captain pulled on the rope, unthinking Buval placed his hand between the bell and the clapper, the chime replaced by his scream of pain. but the captain continued to ring the bell, buval did all he could to muffle its tone but knew there was only one option. When the bell had been placed there had been a safety measure put for if the town ever fell to such an attack as this. a single pin that If removed would cause the bell, if rung again to come loose and fall down the tower. He would not survive Buval knew this but it was his only choice. and so he did it. the bell gave out its last clear chime as it slipped free of its housing and began to fall. and Buval fell with it, the chime of the bell in perfect tone with his scream.   The bell hit the ground first, a mighty crack splitting up one side of it and then Buval landed, back bent over the top of it, he struck the bell and as his head rang against it his final breath was expelled from his body and it was that perfect clear note of the bell. a shockwave of power that resonated out from him, all those who would do Clearbell harm were dropped to their knees from that tone, stunned and unable to move.   And at that point Buval the last chime was the new god of Clearbell. The first act he made it known that the city was now to be named Sunderbell, and that all who heard the bell's last chime were under his protection.
