Mi-Riân

Mi-Riân is the homeplanet of the human races in this Spelljammer setting.   When the first big civilization of sentient humans started, an astral serpentilike dragon descended upon the planet. The dragon saw this planet as a gigantic hoard, with petty little servants who could mine the earth in search of more precious metals. The dragon 'elevated' some of his thrusted servants to a higher state he called 'Vrael Olo' which led to a new species of snake men (Yuan-ti). These elevated priests and priestesses would help the dragon, who named himself Sseth, assert control all over the planet.   Thousands of years go by and despite the slave culture, the humans flourished as a civilization advancing technology to help them gather resources rapidly. Advances in magic did not take such an exponential growth, for Sseth only allowed his Vrael to tinker with magic. Trough the ages Sseth had reincarnated different times trough the bodies of his high priests, who turned out to look more and more serpentlike as time went on. Over the ages, some spells did get out to the public trough the tongues of traitorous Vrael (refered to as Duthrael) or lost scriptures of priests.   Over the years, minor rebellions were plenty but usually easily stamped out by the Vrael. One of the big cities in Mi-Riân, refered to as Doch Raess, was liberated of it's Vrael dictatorship by a civil uprise of the human slaves. 2 weeks later Sseth learned of this betrayal and drenched the city in acid. To this day the city is still a caustic ruin and a symbol of resistance against any kind of oppression.   One day the dragon got overconfident and ordered the slaves to assemble giant space faring constructions, steered by a spelljamming helm and powered by human sacrifices. He then sent out a fleet ordered by his priests to go and plunder other spacefaring vessels. At first this was a great succes, adding to the dragon's massive hoard. But soon after the Galactic Interspecies Collective, under pressure from the Dwarves, gathered and voted to interfere.   This led to a war between the fleets of the Elves and the Dwarves on one side and the fleet of the Vrael on the other side. Enventually the GIC defeated the Vrael fleet, culminating in a fight between Sseth and a collection of the GIC's most powerful warriors and casters. The band of heroes defeated the dragon and chased him off the surface of Mi-Riân.

Geography

Mi-Riân is filled with great cities and pretty badly polluted over the years, not in the least by Sseth and his vile acid breath. The Elves have been trying to shift this balance over the past few years, but it has been an uphill fight since the Human Alliance started building their own fleet of spaceworthy ships.   Besides the big cities, lots of the original natural rainforests and lakes have been repurposed to grow crops, house cattle, start fishfarms or extract raw magic from the land.   Few of the original rainforests still exist, but those that are still alive are filled with vibrant flowers and dangerous creatures. Most inhabitants have never seen many of these animals, for the only beasts they know are those that the Vrael have brought into submission and domesticated.

Fauna & Flora

The plants in the rainforest have an abundancy of different colours and or interesting properties. It is not uncommon for exploration parties to discover a new species with curative or destructive powers. As of recent plants have been regrowing near the caustic bogs and barren polluted areas. They posses their own methods to survive in these harsh environements. Most of them do this by either becomming immune to the poisonous substances in the ground or even thriving of them. It is said some of the plants might even neutralize the poisonous substances they take up.   The animals living in the rainforests are often times vicious and clever. For their populations had been surviving and competing for resources for millions of years. Until the Vrael society started to expand so big that most of their habitats survived. Because of the few remaining rainforests the animal population got so dense that only the most dangerous or sturdy of them could remain.   Alongside the new plants in the caustic regions, new animal species have also been sighted and captured in this new 'ecology'. Most of them seemed to be gruesome adaptations of already existing animals. An example is the caustic rat, able to chew trough metal with it's razorsharp yellow teeth and acid saliva. The amount of eyes and tails these rats possess seem to differ from specimen to specimen. Some of the specimens are also extraordinary tame, compared to most crudely agressive specimens.

Natural Resources

Most of the remaining rainforests in Mi-Raîn have been placed under protection by the Elves in exchange for the freedom of the human population. A few specific sites for small lumbering operations still remain.   The planet also has a high amount of lifestock and agricultural resources. Struggles over primary sources are common and the relatively new established governing factions often times get challenged by other factions over this.   Mi-Riân is also well endowed in ore veins, both of the common and precious kind. However, their Dwarven liberators expect a small percentage of the income yearly, to help rebuild their fleet after the battle for the Freedom of Men.
