Kazotin V

by mod wheat
A secretive backwater world, Kazotin V is ironically a well known planet, a result of the fierce competition for control over the native Vriis and the unrelenting Doma with their Eckosheran soldiers. Geography The planet is tidally locked with the k7 star it orbits, resulting in a blazing desert on one side with an icy arctic on the other. Only a thin band running along the prime meridian of Kazotin V is guaranteed to support life, resulting in fierce competition between the residents of the various marshes, bogs, and swamps that make up the habitable zone. Sulfuric geysers and active volcanic activity in the eastern half allow for life on the snowy side of the planet. The western half is unfortunately much less habitable and is a dry, lava infested wasteland year-round. However, factories and mining operations aren’t the most uncommon thing there, considered the many useful minerals and alloys exposed on the surface. (The habitable zone basically looks like the Lost Kingdom from Super Mario Odyssey. [Kazotin VI was also totally based on a planet in the WH40k Ciaphas Cain book which I'm like 75% sure is Simia Oricalcae but don’t quote me on that.]) The Doma Occupation History after the occupation is a deep and bloody one. The Vriis, a culturally united but violent sided race, packed more punch than the Eckosheran colonizers/conquerors expected, and initially were forced to retreat from the planet. Soon after, Doma leaders sent them right back again during the height of the Colonization Period, desperate for more territory for doma space. But yet again, the Vriis held their ground, the ecksosheran soldiers were forced to call for backup. Unfortunately, eckosharan and doman forces alike were already spread thin, and thus the the stalemates continue to occur for another painstakingly long 12 years. Although a ceasefire was called, just 6 months after war started again. Meanwhile, the Doma were desperately trying to keep the situation on Kazotin V and their other planets in the colonization process under wraps. This cycle continued on for another 29 vriiskian cycles. After one final devastating space strike from the Doma, the Vriis struck a treaty with the Doma and let them take the resources of the east and western halves of the planet, as long as the Vriis stay underground in the meridian habitable zone of the planet. As the frenzy for establishing colonies began to end, the horrors done to the planets were swept so far under the rug they might as well have been part of the floor. Unfortunately for the Doma (and everybody else), after years of patriot colony propaganda and false history, the public finally began seeing past the smoke screen and seeing the planets as what they truly were. Giant tombs. It would take 150 more years for Kazotin V to get into the limelight, kept hidden for the Doma by the Ecksosharans and slowly sucking up the planet's resources as the Vriis kept to themselves underground. This turned out to be a bad decision for the space race, as a HUGE controversy erupted from the accidental discovery of non-ecksosharani life on the planet. Governments were calling, people were protesting and the Ecksosharani were in deep shit. Politics Drama™ Under the numerous technicalities and weird law wording of doma draft bill 234244-09J, it is allowed for anyone to land on the surface of the planet. They just have to be of military corporate in nature, have to interact minimally with the Vriis, and file out forms to ask for explicit permission to go to Kazotin V. Those papers in it of themselves are extensive, tedious, and often takes weeks or months to filter through. And even then you can be denied access. People have been pushing for years for more open access to the Vriis homeworld, but the process has been slow and grueling, especially since it's not in the mainstream media anymore. Immigrants from Kazotin V are also a problem. Officially, once a vriis boards a non-doman vessel, either neutral or otherwise, the crew has the power to either report them or bring them to a non-doman zone, by which that point they can register to be a temporary citizen and get their greencards later. Theres also the added bonus that under a series of peace accords no one can shoot down, chase off, or otherwise act hostile towards any ship without reason. In practice, there a regular checks on ships entering and leaving Kazotin V space, and smugglers have to create more secretive and elaborate spaces to sneak vriis off the planet. It's honestly a big problem and such a mess.
