Winter Solstice Celebration

Prompt:
Create a festival celebrated by one (or more) culture(s) in your world, to kick off a new campaign or story.

Beginning on the winter solstice, this week-long celebration is held to mark and celebrate the annual arrival of the Qhualhul, the ancient Wardens whose presence signifies the beginning of winter.   During the celebration, creatures of all species carefully stack rocks along the chosen path of the Qhualhul. Offerings such as feathers, rocks, crystals, and other items are placed upon the rocks. These cairns serve as landmarks to guide the Qhualhul on their journey.   Curiously, blades of whipgrass braided together are a common offering placed on the cairns. Though simple, the Qhualhul do not view them as “lazy” or “trivial”, instead choosing to regard them as a touching tribute to the time and effort a creature put in for their [the Qhualhul’s] sake.   At the end of the celebration, the Qhualhul return to their ancestral lands until the next winter. Though some have tried, it is impossible to follow them as their home lies in the very heart of the Cloudburst Peaks, a harsh, subzero ring of mountains known as the Crown of Shards.   Despite their protective fluff and layers of blubber, not even the Jotunhel can survive within the Crown of Shards. Rumor has it, however, that an ancient Nyctoxon lives in a cave on the highest mountain in the Crown of Shards.   Though many dismiss the words of the eccentric creatures who spread this rumor, a Ura seer famous for her powers of divining (as well communicating through dreams) claims to have heard the wind whisper this creature’s name; a name long forgotten, never to be uttered again: Ursa.
