The Twelve

The Twelve are a group of well documented historical figures throughout the world. While there is no doubt they actually did exist, stories of their trials and adventures have risen to mythical heights over the many years. As such, they are commonly considered in the same vein as Saints, often prayed to or called on for protection and guidance.

Summary

Remnants are powerful magical items with a personal tie to a once living person. Often, remnants connected to a historical or folkloric figure of great importance are more stable and powerful.

  • Dr Morley’s Journal. Dr Sarcus Morley. This tattered and torn old book describes the Plague of Yonna in great detail… though the pages containing the cure are missing.
  • Beatrix’ Manacle Cuff. Chained Beatrix. The battered iron of this cuff belies this item’s dark history. Parts of it have been rusted from tears long since shed.
  • Ivo’s Tattered Shawl. Ivo of the Veil. The tiny shawl is filled with holes and falling apart at the seams. There is only enough material left for a babe.
  • Erasmus’s Gilded Ribbon. Erasmus of the Moon. The delicate lavender ribbon is worn at the edges, leaving only hints of the gold trim that once adorned it.
  • Basilio’s Pommel Brooch. Basilio of the Blade. Set in steel, a bright piece of green Charoite hangs from an old strip of leather. Both seem more suited to battle than jewelry.
  • Ryall’s Feather Memento. Winged Ryall. A single feather is carefully encased in hardened amber. It seems to have once fit into the head of a staff.
  • Valdis’ Cameo Ring. Wilting Valdis. The facial details of the carved Agate portrait set in this tarnished silver ring have worn away, either by time or the previous owner’s anxious rubbing.
  • Amicia’s Hourglass Pendant. Amicia the Apothecary. Only a few grains of sand remain in this cracked glass teardrop. It seems to have been broken long ago.
  • Gascoigne’s Pocket Lamp. Gascoigne of the Lantern. The basin of the small metal lamp still smells strongly of oil that has long since evaporated. The obsidian handle has become loose.
  • Orabella’s Signet Ring. Orabella of the Sun. The elegant golden band of the ring is set with a myriad of Chrysoberyl gems in varying sizes. A single lavender Moonstone stands out among the gold.
  • Alois’ Galeois Locket. Blossoming Alois. A single indigo Galeois flower adorns the front of the locket. The portrait of the person inside is too old and smudged to identify them.
  • Sylvana’s Enarmes Bracelet. Sylvana of the Shield. The old braided leather still bears signs of battle where red stains have worn away to show the original deep brown beneath.

Historical Basis

Basilio of the Blade and Sylvana of the Shield were legendary warrior twins. Basilio is symbolized by the color green and the month of Galbin. Sylvana is symbolized by the color red and the month of Eryth. Both are the patron heroes of Rhelak, where they were supposedly born.

Blossoming Alois and Wilting Valdis of Rhelak were star-crossed lovers who supposedly would meet in Pryland Forest of Rhelak. Alois is symbolized by indigo, the month Rellen, and flowers - in particular a purple flower known as Galeois, or ‘Alois’ Helmet’ that blooms during Rellen. Valdis is symbolized by brown, the month of Ostrinne, and willow leaves - under which Galeois can commonly be found.

Winged Ryall of Silvestra and Chained Beatrix of Thraewyn were prisoners who attempted to escape a tower; Beatrix despaired and Ryall succeeded. Ryall is symbolized by the color orange, the month of Tenne, and by wings - particularly those of a Ryall’s Owl. Beatrix is symbolized by the color blue, the month of Brandeis, and by chains.

Orabella of the Sun and Erasmus of the Moon were a mythical queen and her loyal knight. Orabella supposedly founded Astawyr, in Utheria, where she is considered a patron hero, and is symbolized by the color yellow, the month of Aureus, and the sun. Erasmus is symbolized by the color violet, the month of Wister, and the moon. He is claimed to have founded Silvestra for his queen.

Amicia the Apothecary and Doctor Sarcus Morley were an apothecary and doctor during a historic plague. Amicia is symbolized by the color magenta, the month of Ferrun, and an hourglass - or sand from one. Doctor Morley is symbolized by the color gray, the month of Payne, and a mask - especially ones with an elongated nose. They are dual patron heroes of the town of Yonna, in Berwen, where the plague supposedly originated.

Gascoigne of the Lantern and Ivo of the Veil were the consort and child of the Lady of the Lantern, who founded Liorendale in Silvestra. Gascoigne is symbolized by the color black, the month of Sable, and lanterns or lantern oil. He is the patron hero of his homeland Utheria, and said to be a descendent of Orabella of the Sun. Ivo is symbolized by the color white, the month of Ivore, and veils or lace. Ivo is considered the patron protector of children. In most areas of the world, children are dressed only in white lace until they grow out of infancy.
