The Heavenly Realms

Compared to its widely advertised opposite, The Abyssal Realms, the Heavenly Realms are far less well mapped and understood. Of all The Outer Dimensions, the Heavens are the least accessible to mortal life and many a mortal magic user has found their inquiries violently curtailed when pursuing glimpses of heavenly secrets. Unlike the Elemental Planes which have a direct metaphysical connection to the substance of the material world, the Heavenly Realm's relationship is more oblique. It only exerts indirect influence on the world through messengers, agents and mortal institutions.
The Heavenly (and Abyssal) Realms play a key part in the flow of life, death and spirit between the various worlds. Good-aligned spirits develop a natural attunement to the Heavenly Realms and are pulled into its flow upon death. There, so the various faiths and stories tell, there are a variety of heavenly kingdoms where the souls live in contentment and fulfillment until they are either reincarnated into the world or absorbed into the realm, perhaps eventually returning to individualized consciousness as a lesser angelic being.
The best known residents of the various Heavens are the good-aligned Deities and their various servants and heralds, frequently referred to by mortals as angels. This term is misleading as there are actually dozens of different forms and ranks of divine servitors, only a handful of whom resemble the winged beings most mortals would imagine.
