The world is built around two landmasses with great distances of water between. The first, currently populated by the Azuran Kingdom was previously occupied by multiple Kingdoms each under a patron Deity. However after a century long war simply known as the Old War, the six Kingdoms were whittled down to only the Azuran Kingdom.   As for the other continent. It has experienced peace for as long as known. If the Azuran Continent was unified by conquest then the Umbral Continent was unified by diplomacy and subterfuge. The Lasombra family working against other noble houses to gain majority power within the Empire.
