Shrapnel Shielding

I don't care how thick your armor is. If a tungsten round is accelerated to a percentage of the speed of light, it will go throu anything.

But for some reason if that bulet was fired from 3000 kilometers away it would still penetrate 5 metres thick hull, but a military grade tactical warhead exploding one meter from the hull will leave no damage marks and just make the interior components spark a bit. So this is basicaly a reason why shrapnel doesn't do anything, when ithe shields are on, otherwise goodbye, sayonara, bonjorno, doviđenja and other parting phrases when a hand grenade explodes in the hand of an unfortunate boarded. Shrapnel Shielding (SS) was also further modified to protect from radiation hazards, help from heat and cold hazards, as well as an improvised shock absorbant on ALL ships, military, private, or otherwise.
Don't ask me about the sciencs behind the "improvised shock absorbant" part, I just made it to make it easier and safer for ships because there are A LOT of hazards in space, be it natural or otherwise.

Utility

It was discovered part due to military requests and general travel safety.

Access & Availability

Every lincesed space traveling ship must have one to be able to leave port.

Complexity

Relatively simple, mostly modifications to normal shielding.
