Psairin (/ˈsaɪə.rən/)
A soirean race of humans with characteristics of fish and other aquatic animals.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Psairins are divided into two types, land psairins and water psairins. Water psairins are analogous to mer people of earth, with the bodies of personae and the tails of sea creatures. However, land psairins look more similar to personae, with smaller characteristics like amphibious gills or fins.
Biological Traits
Psairins usually have fins and gills along with tails with scales, while mammalian Psairin have a layer of blubber as well as blowholes.
Growth Rate & Stages
Psairins grow similar to fish and unless they are mammalian Psairin, infants take between a few days and a week to hatch.
Ecology and Habitats
While the optimal environment is temperate and tropical oceans, psairins can be found in a lot of places, including on land.
Behaviour
While land Psairin can often be seen on land, ocean Psairin outside of Jatung Laut are much more mysterious, often being seen by sailors to trade or deep within the ocean. Small communities of Psairin exist outside of Jantung Laut in deep waters and very rarely come near to shorelines. This leads to the stereotype that psairin communities contain vast amounts of treasures which leads to many adventurers seeking out these towns.
Additional Information
Geographic Origin and Distribution
Water Psairins make their homes beneath the tides, in small, isolated villages nestled between various formations on the seabed. Often times water psairins will find themself on the surface meeting a ship of sailors. Many stories and legends have been born from these interactions, from some psairins cursing sailors to a watery grave to others gifting vast amounts of treasure any personae could hope for. Within Jantung Laut water psairins inhabit the undersides of floating villages with land psairins inhabiting the topside. Because of the hollowness of many of the Lautian islands, psairins can also be found within many aquatic caves.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Psairin regardless of type are able to swim extremely fast and breathe underwater. Psairin are also able to dive to incredible depths and are often used to scavenge sunken ships. In order to be on land for extended periods of time, aquatic psairins need to cast a bubbling spell to cover their head in a bubble of water, otherwise they are able to swim in air as they would in water.
Symbiotic and Parasitic organisms
Ocean leeches are an organism widely considered a pest by psairins and should be avoided at all costs. Not only do leeches carry diseases they also feed off of Psairin blood.
Civilization and Culture
Naming Traditions
Psairin communities within the Azure Ocean can be divided into two categories, Bubble languages and Call languages. Bubble languages name children by traits and objects associated with the child. These names re usually of varying lengths and stresses of different bubbles. Example, OOoooOooOooO-male name meaning strong volcano, oOooOo- female name meaning plentiful pearl. Bubble languages do not contain surnames and are instead the name of the town. Call languages however name the child based on the first sound the child makes when earning their voice as a toddler. These sounds are a combination of clicks, whistles and squawks. Before earning their voice the child is referred to as Eeeeik ek ekeeeik which roughly translates to silent child despite how loud infants actually are.
Lautian Psairin follow the Lautian naming schemes.
