The Men in Black Profession in Slumbering Gods | World Anvil

The Men in Black

You can't trust him! He's a Man in Black! There's no telling what he could do. Besides rip out your soul, or worse...make you another one of them.
The Men in Black, may or may not have associations with things from space, are known for being to say, the least, mysterious. These "men in black" are people, who may or may not, work for The Prophets, or the gods. (Some people like to speculate it is possible these men are gods, or at least possessed by one. But these are just theories. Nothing has been proven.)   NOTE: the following information is based off of speculation and information that has been gathered by the writer (who used some questionable resources, of which she is very ashamed of.)

Career

Qualifications

The qualifications to be a Man in Black are simple. First, be silent. Men in Black are quiet, yet observant. A future Man in Black must be able to do the same. Take in his surroundings, including the people and the setting, and make conclusions based on what he saw, heard, smelled, touched, and tasted.

The second qualification a Man in Black must have is smarts. Men in Black are able to deduce and induce things extremely quickly, therefore anyone who wishes to join them just have equal smarts. However, if a person who wishes to join this mysterious group does not find himself smart or clever and has no idea what inducing and deducing are fear not! For Men in Black can easily teach an apprentice this fine art.

The third qualification is quite simple. Being able to stand wearing a black suit in the heat of the summer. Now, Men in Black do not always wear suits, only when they have important meetings with other members of this group. However, the suit is a symbol of who they are, and it is very important that an possible apprentice can pull this classic look off.

Career Progression

If a person were to begin his career as a Man in Black two things generally have to happen before he can move up. First, he must pass a test given by his mentor. This test is usually physical (Sources say usually by doing something horrible.) Second, he must solve a problem or a question. This test is mental and when he passes he may move up the ranks. (These tests are unknown to the writer, and she is simply making her best guesses on what these tests may be.)

After passing the tests, he officially becomes a Man in Black and he will perform given assignments and tasks given by his overseer. In order to move up in the organization he must complete those assignments and tasks quickly and efficiently.

Payment & Reimbursement

Men in Black are very wealthy people. They are considered the nobles in the chaotic and almost fallen World. Men in Black get paid first by their employer (if they have one), then by their overseer. The better they did on an assignment the more pay.

Other Benefits

The benefits to being a Man in Black are unknown. People speculate it is the secrets the Men in Black have, others think it is the skills a person can learn. However, the writer believes it to be both, along with the idea of wealth and power.

Perception

Purpose

Everyone the writer interviewed could not find information about what the men in Black actually do. However, she has gleaned from hints and subtle phrasing that the Men in Black are a criminal organization, who may or may not steal from The Prophets, and possibly the gods.

Social Status

Men in Black are considered by the people to be something like gods on earth. Powerful, mysterious, and something they can never be. However, some people think of them as glorified human beings. Simple men who have been placed on a pedestal.

This view causes the want to be a Man in Black fairly low. However, there are always several people who cannot contain their curiosity, and they decide to join this...organization.

Demographics

No one quite knows who exactly the Men in Black are, since the only thing used to identify them are thier black suits. Because of this unknown knowing exactly how big this organization is is impossible to find out. Unless, of course, you were to join.

Operations

Tools

The tools of the Men in Black are shrouded in mystery, but there is one known thing. Men in Black know how to pick locks, therfore they have a lockpicking kit. There has been speculation as to the other equipment. Some people like to think they have weapons before the death of the gods, such as guns. Others think that they have technology that the Old World would not have been able to comprehend.

Workplace

The HQ of the Men in Black is unknown, but because of the writer's imagination, she likes to think they work in various places. Places in plain sight, but this is just a gues. She does not know for sure, how could she?

Provided Services

If someone were to hire a Man in Black it would be for various undercover operations. These operations would generally be along the lines of stealing, killing, and any other kind of crime you could think of. However, the Men in Black, being some of the best killers/assassins, robbers, and criminals a person can ask for the cost is quite high.   One supposed special service that the Men in Black provide is spying. Simply spying. However, this can be one any person, god, or being a person might want. And if that person wishes, they can always higher a Man in Black to kill and/or rob them all for a reasonable price.

Dangers & Hazards

The only real hazard to this job is, most likely, getting caught. If a Man in Black gets caught in the act of a crime, no one knows exactly what happens. This is most likely because The Prophets never speak about it to outsiders (people who are not Prophets), or because the Men in Black never get caught, or because the Men in Black are in league with The Prophets.

But who really knows what happens to a Man in Black?
Alternative Names
Ignes Fatui (derogatory term used by The Prophets), Human Gods (used by the people of The World)
Type
Illicit
Legality
Because the Men in Black are so secretive and the only group of people who have the power to stop what illegal activities the Men in Black may or may not be doing are The Prophets.

However, The Prophets do not concern themselves with governement issues, and have told no one about the deeds and possible crimes of these Men in Black.
