Faagsal
"A creature that stood like a mountain before us, shaking the earth beneath it as it moved, seemed to understand these strange lands. It seemed to move with it, following the flow of magic but we dared not get any closer." - Vesryn Nala the Explorer
Basic Information
Anatomy
Faagsal are massive creatures whose main body ressembles a large chunk of earth and stone that has been ripped from the land. Under this large and heavy body, they can have up to 12 legs that vary in size and strength, similarly to tree roots. Their head rests atop a giant neck that can be up to 600m (~1970ft.) (similar to the length of its body) and is protected by two swirling shield-like horns. This means they can reach heights of around 1km (~3280ft.). They also have a mane, similarly to human hair that can be quite long. Their body color often shifts with Arrukal, ranging from dark and dull to colorful and bright. These creatures do not have a maximum lifespan as the magic the feed off of allows them to sustain themselves forever in theory.
Genetics and Reproduction
These creatures are so massive that there are only a few of them. When two specimens encounter each other, this leads to a battle where they each try to swing their horns into the other, hoping to cause cracks in their rock-like body. Whenever large pieces of the body are ejected in the fight, in conjonction with the large magic energy emitted, allows the ejected body piece to turn into a smaller specimen. However, since the fights are long, the newly formed specimen are often killed by the devastation or by each other.
A fight between two average Faagsals will end with one victor, being smaller than at the beginning of the fight. The other will have perished in the fight. The ammount of smaller surviving specimens created can range from 2 to 10, varying in size with the average being human sized.
Growth Rate & Stages
These creatures grow slowly. At first, based on its size, it feeds of the magic imbued stones and plants which allows for the fastest growth. However, there comes a point where these are not sufficiently nourishing for the Faagsal so it begins feeding off the ambient magic that can be found high in the sky. They are considered juveniles until they begin feeding off ambient magic.
Ecology and Habitats
When there is a strong Arrukal, or shifting, they are able to merge with the land using their rock like body and root like legs. This allows them to not be knocked around and unstable in this ind of event. The Arrukal thus shifts the land including the Faagsal's body. When the strong shift is over, the creature is able to simply extract a new body, similar in size to the previous one.
Additional Information
Social Structure
Faagsal are solitary creatures that wander the lands. When two specimens encounter each other, a fight ensues leaving a single survivor from the two combattants. However, this is also how the species multiplies.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
The Faagsal are imbued with the ambient magic of The Drifting Lands. Their mane absorbs ambient magical energy from the high skies where magic has no where to go. This allows them to support their massive weight, growth, and shifting. This absorption also allows them to know when large-scale geography shifting is going to happen because of the ambient magic energy's fluctuations.
