The Abyss
The Abyss is the general term given to the oceanic depths of the area around Skeyer. It gets its name from the inky blackness surrounding the dome, resembling that of a sealed, darkened room with no light source. The name includes religious symbolism as well in its referral to that of the final journey of the people of Skeyer and how it is a commonly held belief among the people that it can either provide their idea of salvation through the Garden, the final resting place and home to the Faith’s sacred oceanic god; or if they lack the piousness required, be left to wander the darkness forever.
Carnivorous marine wildlife in the Abyss does relatively well given the constant source of human remains introduced into the environment resulting from the ceremonies involved with the religion of the Conarians. Vegetation around the exterior of the dome however has been affected by the essence like that of crops inside the dome. This being due to the residue left on the bodies of those evicted from Skeyer spreading to the nearby vegetation. This effect on the ecosystem drastically diminishes as one were to move further away from the dome.
The general populace of Skeyer know little about what the Abyss actually entails in terms of geography and appearance outside what they can see through the dome and descriptions from leaders and the depictions of their faith through art and text. Many believe that the Abyss is all that lies outside of the dome and have no knowledge that a surface world exists, making the arrival of the Ekonians all the more bewildering to them. The Ekonians know much more about the Abyss in contrast to the denizens of Skeyer. They had navigated the Abyss for some time before happening upon Skeyer, which was reported to have existed and was given rough coordinates in surface documents.
