The Nymphs of the Forest of Dreams

Those who Wander amongst Dreams

"Should we worry about that?" Ruxel tipped his head in the nymphs' direction.
"No, they're just curious. They mean us no harm," Keira said. “We have nothing to fear from the creatures of the Forest, so long as we don't agitate them.”
Another curiosity unique to the Forest of Dreams: Nymphs, a race of semi-intelligent, community-based people who closely resembled trees. When young, they resembled humans in stature and form. As they age, they grow more gnarled and twigs begin sprouting from their bodies, yet they lose no vigor. Nymph elders, the ones who guide and care for younger ones, even had a basic aptitude at magic. Some could even conjure fire and flame. One almost never finds a nymph outside of the Forest of Dreams, yet the rare nymph fledgling may develop a wanderlust for the greater world and greater things.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Nymphs have bark-like skin with hair like gnarled roots. Younger nymphs bear a striking resemblance to elves.

Genetics and Reproduction

Nymphs do not procreate or have children. They grow in the Forest of Dreams from the earth, beings of pure and untamed magic. Only a certain number of nymphs can exist at a time. When a nymph dies, a new one is born by the Forest until their population is saturated.

Growth Rate & Stages

Like Groot.

Ecology and Habitats

The nymphs belong to the Forest of Dreams. It is there that they are born and, for almost all, it is there that they die.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Nymphs do not require food to survive, only sunlight. However a nymph will not grow or age unless it is exposed to a constant source of magic, the likes of which can be found in only a few places of the world.

Additional Information

Facial characteristics

Take an elf's face and replace its skin with bark.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Only located in the Forest of Dreams

Average Intelligence

While nymphs have shown signs of intelligence, they seem content to live without technology. No one knows the Forest of Dreams better than the nymphs, yet the nymphs are largely ignorant of the world outside of the Valen trees.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Nymphs have sensory capabilities very similar to elves and humans. However, when they aren't in the sun and have no dirt beneath them, their kinesthetic intelligence drops to that of a toddler's.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Naming traditions for nymphs are very important and sacred. As nymphs have no relation to one another other than race, a nymph's name is very precious to them. When a new nymph comes into being, the rest of the community celebrates. The new nymph is usually named by something happening in proximity of their birth- like an oncoming storm, the first ray of dawn, or the ending of winter. Their names are usually elvish in nature, sounds deriving from their archaic form of elvish. Nymphs take great pride in their names and the circumstances they are derived from.

Gender Ideals

Nymphs have very loose and fluid ideals of gender. Before exposure to outside cultures, nymphs didn't have a set perception of gender. While some nymphs are more feminine or masculine presenting, appearance matters very little to the actual gender, or lack thereof, identity of the nymph.

Average Technological Level

Nymphs have no need for technology. Living isolated in the forest of dreams, outsiders rarely stay long within their realm, leaving no long term connection between the nymphs and the world beyond their borders. Consequently, nymphs have very little understanding of modern day technology.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

Nymphs speak the language that was gifted to them by the gods- an ancient form of elvish that has yet to undergo the evolutionary changes most other forms of elvish have. They have capacity to learn other languages- including common- but as most nymphs rarely leave the forest, very few speak anything other than ancient elvish.

Common Dress Code

Nymphs have no concept of clothing, and consequently there is not a stitch of clothing on a nymph residing in the forest of dreams. If, by some rarity, a nymph is to leave the forest, they do not see reason in partaking in clothing, though if it is forced upon them they will accept some sort of outfit.

Historical Figures

Nymphs have very little historical events, and consequently almost no historical figures. However, nymphs do share stories and other tales through oral storytelling, such as their creation and certain species who have traveled through their woods.

Common Myths and Legends

The Forest of Dreams hold many myths and superstitions in other cultures, but the nymphs within its boundaries pay little mind to myths of the outside world. The only legend passed down is the one of their creation by the gods.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Nymphs do not interact much with other species, as most nymphs do not leave the forest of dreams and most others species do not dare enter. If someone enters the forest, nymphs generally stay to themselves unless threatened. Nymphs have no solid concept or understanding of other species except for the occasional human, elf, or body that passes through their trees, and are thusly indifferent to most.
