Duchy of Divcia

Structure

Duke at the top. His responsibilities include leading the military forces of the Duchy in war, setting overall infrastructure policy for the Duchy, negotiating treaties with foreign polities/organizations, issuing laws, and functioning as court/arbitrator of last resort for any legal disputes in the Duchy. Below the Duke are the counts. Their responsibilities are very similar to those of the Duke, just scaled down to the county level. Below them (and the Duke via his personal count(y/ies)) are the barons. And again, their responsibilities are the same as the counts but scaled down.

Assets

The Duke of Divcia directly owns several castles, manors, and other holdings (like mines, towns, etc.). The counts directly controls a handful of castles and several manors and other holdings, while barons only have a single castle and handful manors. They use these to maintain their households, which not only contains their families and servants, but clerks to help administer their holdings and soldiers to provide a core of professionals for when he goes to war.

History

Svarnmark was founded by human mercenaries hired by the Serene Empire (due to an inability to recruit enough soldiers from amongst its own population at a high enough rate to keep up with various threats) to put down some rebellions. After some defeats, lack of pay, and various other setbacks during these rebellions, the mercenaries rebelled against the local imperial commanders and started fighting for themselves. They sent messages back to their homelands. telling the rulers, fellow warriors, and the families that they had left behind that there is great wealth and fertile land for the taking. As the mercenaries kept fighting the local high elves, warriors from their original homelands and their families started to reinforce them and allowed them to consolidate their control of territory they've taken from the high elves and start settling the portions that weren't occupied. Many of the leaders among the mercenaries married the children of local high elven nobility.

Agriculture & Industry

Most farms are primarily based around growing grains and legumes with orchards, animal husbandry, and flax forming significant cash crops. For most farms, animal husbandry takes the form of cattle and sheep herding, but horse breeding makes a significant portion of the agricultural economy as well, especially war horses for the nobles.
