Shifting Shadows

The world has been destroyed. Society has fallen apart, and people live in solitary groups, at least it was this way over 200 years ago. Now enough time has passed to allow for society to put itself back together. Its still fragmented. major cities are separated by large distances, and most people travel by foot or horse back, but technology has improved again. We are now in an age of steam and gadgets. Of using theses strange crystals to power them that have formed since the Unraveling.   What is the Unraveling? It is said that many, many hundreds of years age, the world had been a paragon of peace and prosperity. The energy crises that had caused so much conflict and strife had been solved, thanks to the Boniner family who discovered a way to produce vast amounts of energy at without any side effects and was able to send it to all the world. This allowed the world and its people to prosper, and increased the technological capabilities to heights unknown to the world before.   However, that power source got out of control, and began Unraveling certain areas, making it impossible for any humans to enter those places affected by the Unraveling. The worst hit was what became known as the Rapar. It became a sandy desert that only animals can freely enter. Any human that tried became extremely sick with Unraveling sickness. Other places were similarly changed. One place became a rain-forest where none had been before, another a treacherous mountain that had once been a flat plain, and another a tundra of ice and snow. The surrounding borderlands where also changed to reflect the Unraveled areas, though not as extreme, and humans can live there without consequences. Because of the Unraveling, society, which had become dependent on the energy source, fell apart.   Soon after the Unraveling, people found these strange crystals that could be used as power. Some only produced energy. Others, if treated in the right way, could produce heat, cold, and other effects. The crystals grow in certain areas, along lines, called by many, Lei lines, but the highest qualities and largest growths where in the borderland areas. So people began cultivating crystal farms and moving back to the borderlands and society was able to put itself back together again. However, humans still couldn't enter Unraveled areas without becoming sick. It is said that there are some creatures that can. Weather they are humans that can turn into animals, or animals that can become humans, no one knows, but theses Skinwalkers can freely come and go without becoming sick. But that is only a myth... Right?
