Shifting Earth

At first glance, this world is Earth as we know it. But little do people know, secret networks, islands, and villages of "Shifters" live among them. Shifters are able to control different "Energies" because they are half human and half "Energy". These Energies are sorted into 7 groups; fire, water, earth, nature, life, death, and reality. The Shifters are also sorted into one of these groups based on what energy they can control.   However Shifters are not the only magical creatures out there. If enough energy is gathered in one place, it will turn into a Demon. A Demon's level of humanity (intelligence, compassion, etc.) can vary. Sometimes Demons only goal is to kill and destroy. Sometimes Demons want to create other Demons. Sometimes Demons aren't even self aware and just want to exist in peace. Shifters' (mainly shifters in cities) job is to protect humans and animals from Demons.   Shifters have lived among humans for the whole of humanity. The most common origin myth of shifters is each Energy used to be a sentient creature, basically a god. These sentient creatures had been alive as long as the universe had been alive, and they were growing tired of their responsibilities. When humans came along, they decided the humans were intelligent enough to carry these responsibilities. So each sentient creature merged with a human, and the race of Shifters was born.
